TimF Posted November 25, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 25, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) The Amateur Photographer review has now been published (in the shops on Tuesday for non-subbers), and the M8 scored 84%. In a side panel, the reviewer states that he tried a few CV optics on the M8 alongside Leica 35mm 'cron Asph and 50mm 'lux (pre-Asph). He suggests that the CV 35mm Nokton will not focus to infinity on the M8. Can anyone confirm this?
Advertisement Posted November 25, 2006 Posted November 25, 2006 Hi TimF, Take a look here M8 and the CV 35mm/1.2 Nokton. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted November 25, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 25, 2006 I have to smile because there's also a review of the M8 in the latest edition of Reponses Photo that arrived this morning and it scored 85% with one of the plus points being its value for money ;-) Can't understand the CV thing, if the lens is ok then is should focus to infinity just like all the other lenses that can be used on an M8. gravastar Posted November 25, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 25, 2006 That doesn't sound right. The Nokton uses a piston action to operate the rangefinder roller/cam, so it's effective movement is independent of the placement of the follower cam in the camera. I believe it's the lenses which use a rotating collar with a ground curve to operate the cam which can have interchangeability problems between cameras. I'm also interested to know the answer since I use the Nokton on an R-D1 and hopefully an M8. Bob.
wizard Posted November 25, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 25, 2006 I'm sure that's a tolerance issue on that particular lens and/or camera. The Nokton and some other CV lenses employ the M-bayonet mount and thus are fully interchangeable with the original Leica M-mount. Andy
TimF Posted November 25, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted November 25, 2006 That's what I thought. Then again, there was a well known compatibility issue between the Bessa T and some 4th type 35mm Summicrons (in fact, I owned one of the lenses in question). IIRC, someone on here has mentioned the combination in question.
blakley Posted November 25, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 25, 2006 OK, I tried it. The CV 35/1.2 mounts fine on the M8 (as long as you don't have it focused at infinity). You can move the helical throughout its motion and everything is fine UNTIL you get to JUST A HAIR before infinity. At this point, the lens "binds" against the interior of the camera and resists further motion toward infinity focus. It feels like a "light" binding - i.e. if I twisted a little further I might be able to overcome the resistance and focus the lens all the way to infinity. But that would require a little more curiosity than I have about equipment this expensive.... There does appear to be an issue with the physical dimensions of the lens and the configuration of the lensmount throat on the M8. It seems to be angle-dependent, so it's only a problem near infinity. I haven't taken the time to determine what exactly the problem is, but it is a problem. bradreiman Posted November 26, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 26, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) i'll settle this.....i have taken hundreds of shots with m8/cv35-1.2. it focuses to infinity and very well, tack sharp i mean it. it does bind a bit near infinity but just increase the pressure slightly and take it all the way. im stunned by this lens. i have several lenses and have been using mostly the cv35 on the m8...b
