16-18-21 on M9

Should be great. I have the WATE on an M8 and as I love wides most of the reason for wanting a FF M9 is to get ultra wide. If you do architecture or interiors, the finder is valuable just to get the bubble level. Otherwise, it's merely an option and a large block at that. Remember the WATE is an actual zoom lens, you can frame very critically if you wish.

When I get my M9 I'll let you know. (been on order since August 3)

Here is a test shot at 16mm/f5.6. So far I think it works well. You have to manually set the focal length, otherwise I think it assumes 18mm.

I was concerned that it would not perform well on the M9 but I'll be keeping mine. I used the CV 12mm on the M8 but this is better.

If you set lens detection to "Auto" then the focal length reported in the EXIF information is 16mm regardless of the setting on the lens. If you manually set the focal length in the menu then the EXIF reports the set focal length. In practice I've not seen any difference between corner corrections applied in the manual settings and auto. It seems as if the same corrections are applied to the 16, 18 and 21mm settings, the only thing setting the focal length manually seems to do is to report the setting in the EXIF data. I believe Stephen Daniels has said as much at some time. The lens works well on the M9 :).

I just spent a few days shooting with an M9 and wate (as well as a 35lux and 75cron).

The wate struck me as an excellent performer on the m9.

I had a hard time getting accurate framing with the Leica finder. Since just about all my wate shots were on a tripod I found myself just taking a picture and using the LCD for framing.

Kind of a poor man's live view. To me this lens and tripod shooting really spoke to why Leica needs liveview on this camera.

But as to the lens, I'll definitely be keeping it. My wide shooting is 99% landscapes and so the f/4 is just fine.

Steve welcome to this forum. Some great shots on your website, assuming you are the same guy that posts on getdpi.

Thanks Jeff.

I used an M6 a long time ago, but with the M9 feel like a RF newbie again. Been browsing here and at getdpi for helpful info.

Here's one from the weekend. This was with the wate at 16mm. Front rocks were about 2 feet from the camera.

thanks for all the answers. just wondering if people tend to use this lens with tripod or find it sharp wide open and handeld. I would be looking to use it for city/landscape and to start with on 8.2 and later on M9. at the moment I mostly use a Nikkor 24mm/f3.5 PC (perspective control) lens on a D700 and I manage to use this handheld but I can happily bump the iso to 800 with no real difference in IQ. what do you all think?

Hi There

it's wonderful on the M9

There is no need to change the focal length in the lens selection unless you want the specific focal length in the exif - the corner correction works very well. the following were all taken with the WATE, hand held, with Auto lens correction.

The framelines on the WATE finder (frankenfinder) are really accurate on the M9. It's a lovely lens, and after you've removed the filter holder for the IR filter it even seems small.

I can't recommend it enough.

I was going to ask Steve which finder he used. Like Jono I've found the "FrankenFinder" to be very accurate, especially since it has an adjustable parallax correction for various distances. That's most useful for work with closeup foregrounds.

The worst finder in my opinion is the small barrel shaped 21-24-28 I used with the WATE on the M8. Not only do the edges of the field of view depend on eye position they're also not well defined. In addition if you require a diopter correction lens the diopter value depends on the focal length setting. It's a finder I wouldn't have bought if I'd known it's limitations beforehand.

M9 & Tri-Elmar @ 16mm

This lens shows its true potential on this camera, as do most of my lenses on the M9.
