alexc Posted October 13, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Two things happened to me yesterday: 1. Camera was in a sleeping mode. I saw a good picture opportunity lifted the camera up and pressed the shutter. Camera froze and I had to remove the battery and put it back in. Never happened to me with M8. 2. I forgot to take the cap off and took a shot. Instead of waiting for camera go through processing I did what I always did with M8 without any problems - switched it off and turned on again. It froze the camera. All of this is not big deal, BUT.... Anybody experienced similar issues?
Advertisement Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Hi alexc, Take a look here more M9 issues. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ModernMan Posted October 13, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2009 Perhaps there should be a thread to report camera freezups, so we can get some insight from patterns which emerge. Anyway I've not experienced the ones you described. I did have one freeze only so far, when deleting all images from the card.

toona Posted October 14, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 14, 2009 same thing here. turned on camera, forgot about the cap, pressed to take a picture and realizing my error, I turned the camera off. the camera froze and the viewfinder was flashing "sd". took off baseplate and removed battery, reinserted, which did the trick. otherwise it's been smooth sailing! But it never happened when using the camera "normally". Only when I was "playing" with it. It never happened with the M8 in almost 3 years. Let's wait for a new firmware. papimuzo Posted October 14, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 14, 2009 Two things happened to me yesterday: 1. (snip) 2. (snip) - switched it off and turned on again. It froze the camera. Anybody experienced similar issues? I can obtain my camera (M8) freezing at will when doing a fast switch OFF-ON. To be noted: it is the ONLY problem I got with my M8 which was never going to Solms for now more than two years:rolleyes:
johnbuckley Posted October 14, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 14, 2009 Same problem others have reported: when mistakenly taking a picture with the cap on -- sheesh, how many of us do that ;-) based on this sample, seems like maybe a lot... -- it freezes. Battery out, battery in, all's fine again. Total loss of time: 20 seconds. Total loss of opportunity: immeasurable.
bybrett Posted October 14, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 14, 2009 If you take a picture with a cap on (in A mode) don't switch the camera off... move the shutter dial to 4000. Or don't use a cap.

Battery out, battery in, all's fine again. Total loss of time: 20 seconds. Total loss of opportunity: immeasurable. I'm not defending the M9. I don't even have one yet:confused: But if you're shooting once-in-a-lifetime events where the loss of opportunity is immeasurable, perhaps you should have had the lens cap off to begin with:D I use protective UV filters on my lenses, but the ONLY time I use caps is if I'm packing for air travel and I have lenses stacked end-to-end (and wrapped in a lenswrap). Having said all that, I do find these reports of freezes troubling.
viramati Posted October 14, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 14, 2009 £4850 for Beta model. what would it cost if it worked properly from day 1. Never had problems like this when I buy new Nikon model!!!

Ok, looks like we have a consistently reproducable firmware bug. My M9 freezes every time with the above procedure.

bill Posted October 14, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 14, 2009 Good grief. Let me ask a simple question. How many of these so-called lock-ups have happened with the camera in auto exposure mode? I get this with my M7, for goodness' sake. Take Brett's advice and stop blaming the camera.. Regards, Bill

viramati Posted October 14, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 14, 2009 happy with my d700 and am not into the megapixel goldrush. my point is that in all the years I've had nikon (started with an FM1) i've never had one go wrong on me and they have often been pretty badly treated. On the other hand my leica 8.2 had to be sent back after a week to have the rangefinder adjusted! so as much as i love my leica I don't think their reliability, build quality is really up to scratch. bybrett Posted October 14, 2009 Share #19 Posted October 14, 2009 If this is a serious issue for "you" - 1) leave the lens cap at home 2) use an SLR and then you will know when you have left the lens cap on the camera 3) if you shoot M9 with a cap on don't switch the camera off whilst it is busy making you a picture of it 4) move the shutter dial from A to 4000 and Bob's your Uncle Hope that helps
