Advertisement Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 Hi Marty, Take a look here Wired on Leica. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted October 13, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2009 Interesting, especially the lens related stuff. It would suggest that recent claims that the lenses (like the bodies) are 90% made in Portugal is complete bollocks. The projection of the pattern on the wall is a spectacular way of assessing sharpness (I'd seen this previously in some photos that Ralph Gibson shot for a brochure a few years ago and had no idea what the purpose of it was). Guest BigSplash Posted October 13, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 13, 2009 Another tour here. Thanks this is one of the better tours around Solms that I have seen with great photos.
nhabedi Posted October 13, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 13, 2009 It would suggest that recent claims that the lenses (like the bodies) are 90% made in Portugal is complete bollocks. It most likely is. Probably some in Portugal were a bit too proud over what they're doing. For the body, yes, lots of the parts are pre-built in Portugal, but that doesn't amount to 90% of the "Wertschöpfung" (value generated) or it wouldn't be called "Made in Germany". Maybe it's 90% of the weight... How much of the lenses is done in Solms can also be seen in this German TV documentary from a year ago or so: Ein Leben für Leica. andybarton Posted October 13, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 13, 2009 Has ANYONE ever suggested that lenses are made in Portugal? When we did the Solms tour last year, it was pretty clear that all the lenses were made there.
wattsy Posted October 13, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 13, 2009 Has ANYONE ever suggested that lenses are made in Portugal? I think so. There was a thread recently where it was claimed that the lenses as well as bodies are largely built in Portugal before being shipped to Germany to have a sticker stuck on (I'm exaggerating but I'm sure there was a claim made for the lenses as well). msweeney Posted October 13, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 13, 2009 I was fascinated to read under the fifth picture: In later years, Leica produced other major innovations, including autofocus, though the technology was sold to Minolta early on. Did Leica then actually invent autofocus? When? And why did they sell the technology to Minolta? best regards, Mike
Marty Posted October 13, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted October 13, 2009 They did - it was called "Correfot." I think they were convinced at the time that pros would not want/need it. I can't recall the book that mentions this right now but Wikipedia has something. Edit: whole thread here.
ho_co Posted October 13, 2009 Share #10 Posted October 13, 2009 I haven't seen any claim that Portugal makes lenses, but Portugal has never produced lenses for M or R (or S). I don't know about binoculars, but never for cameras.
