Wired on Leica

Interesting, especially the lens related stuff. It would suggest that recent claims that the lenses (like the bodies) are 90% made in Portugal is complete bollocks. The projection of the pattern on the wall is a spectacular way of assessing sharpness (I'd seen this previously in some photos that Ralph Gibson shot for a brochure a few years ago and had no idea what the purpose of it was).

It most likely is. Probably some in Portugal were a bit too proud over what they're doing. For the body, yes, lots of the parts are pre-built in Portugal, but that doesn't amount to 90% of the "Wertschöpfung" (value generated) or it wouldn't be called "Made in Germany". Maybe it's 90% of the weight... :)

How much of the lenses is done in Solms can also be seen in this German TV documentary from a year ago or so: Ein Leben für Leica.

Has ANYONE ever suggested that lenses are made in Portugal?

I think so. There was a thread recently where it was claimed that the lenses as well as bodies are largely built in Portugal before being shipped to Germany to have a sticker stuck on (I'm exaggerating but I'm sure there was a claim made for the lenses as well).

I was fascinated to read under the fifth picture:

In later years, Leica produced other major innovations, including autofocus, though the technology was sold to Minolta early on.

Did Leica then actually invent autofocus? When? And why did they sell the technology to Minolta?

best regards, Mike
