wwulfsohn Posted October 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anyone have any experience with Leica lenses on a Canon GF1? I have an M8 but have always found it a bit dust filled and clunky. I thought the GF1, with its four thirds format and preview, would be great. I plan to get an adapter so I can use all my great Leica lenses with the camera. Let's face it, Leica makes great lenses but not the best cameras. Any opinions or personal experiences? treeplanter Posted October 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 12, 2009 What's a Canon GF1? And who says Leica doesn't make great cameras? Jim B.

jbgeach Posted October 12, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 12, 2009 The leica lenses will work well with the Panasonic GF1. Biggest problem is the 2x crop factor. The 35mm f/2 you love will now be a 70mm telephoto. That being said, if you have one you should try it.
ho_co Posted October 13, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 13, 2009 Keep in mind that Leica M lenses 50mm and longer work fine on the GF1, but the quality is mediocre with lenses shorter than 50mm. R lenses work fine. There have been a number of forum threads on using the lenses with the Lumix G1; Michael Reichmann says the same holds for use with the GF1 as for the G1. Gerard Posted October 13, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 13, 2009 I'm amazed you find the M8 clunky, Wulf. I feel privileged to have found myself in a position to buy an M8 recently and find it one of the most precise photographic tools I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. I know I’ve a long way to go before I can describe myself as a competent user, and I know I'm currently not getting the kind of shots such a tool is capable of most of the time but; I'm loving the practice and know I'll improve with every shot. The GF1 will be an extremely competent camera, but it’s a completely different beast to the M8. Far less engaging and intuitive. And, in a way, due to the mass of electronic controls, it could be described as quite ‘clunky’ in use compared to the 'tight' operation of an M8(.2). Hey; if you’re not getting on with the M8, you sure won’t have trouble selling it.

gfspencer Posted October 13, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 13, 2009 I'm amazed you find the M8 clunky, Wulf. If you are talking about camera size, the M8 is a bit clunky when compared to a GF-1. The GF1 will be an extremely competent camera, but it’s a completely different beast to the M8. Far less engaging and intuitive. And, in a way, due to the mass of electronic controls, it could be described as quite ‘clunky’ in use compared to the 'tight' operation of an M8(.2). If you are talking about clunky in use, you are quite right. There are so many different controls that the GF-1 can be confusing. (The manual is 202 pages! ) However, the GF-1 does take pretty decent pictures and it is nice to take along when you don't want to carry your M8 kit. I haven't tried any Leica lenses on the GF-1. I'm waiting on an adaptor.
hammam Posted October 13, 2009 Share #12 Posted October 13, 2009 Clunky? I'd have thought the M8 could be called anything but clunky. Clunky? Oh, well...
