Nevin Nevin Posted January 15, 2012 Share #1  Posted January 15, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My X1 arrived a week ago from the organiser of a photo contest in which I was lucky enough to win the grand prize. After a week of shooting with the X1, I am more surprised by the simplicity and IQ of the camera than by the luck to win it.  I wrote my impression of the camera in my blog. To share with the potential buyers:  "After using the X1 for a week, I can conclude that the X1 is not as some users commented to not be able to do the job due to sluggish focusing. The AF speed is not world-class for sure. But it is not horrible either. I gather that for any experienced and discerning photographers, it is an unique digital photographic gear reminiscent of a film camera. The effective implementation of the MF simply invites one to use it. Together with the dials for exposure combo tweaking, the MF is an integral part of the film-camera déjà vu experience.  It is unusual that one has to mind the safe shutter speed – probably an obsolete term now -- when using a digital camera. The X1 is such a camera. That is very well as this adds to the thinking process before fully pressing the shutter release as in the case of a film camera.  The supreme image quality is a matter of course.  In a nutshell, it is a camera for experienced photographers, especially for those who come from the film era."  I mostly use the X1 on M mode and MF. My other cameras include the Leica D-lux 5, Sony A55, Ricoh GX200 and a Minolta Dynax 7 film camera. I look forward to learn from the forum users and Leica owners. Have a nice day! phancj Posted January 16, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted January 16, 2012 It is clear to me that the X1 is a camera that either one really likes or hates, it is a case of whether one gets it or not. Â It has a large enough sensor, good lens, excellent image processing, and really small. Â One thing that many fail to recognize is how good the camera is for candid shots compared to ANY cameras out there by virtue of its dimunitive size so no one bothers when you shoot with it. Thank you for your realistic summary which confirms what I have believed for a long time. The X1 rewards those photographers who are prepared to use their brains rather than rely entirely on automation. It is a highly capable camera. Â Only yesterday I was obliged to shoot some private family function mainly in candle-light. I set ISO 800, metered for the bright area, used full aperture and captured some truly magical moments.
