paulpp Posted April 24, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted April 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have just taken the plunge and ordered one to improve the grip on the camera. Spent sometime considering the Leica grip, but cost is an issue so went with the Thumbs Up. Am I going to be disappointed?
Advertisement Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Hi paulpp, Take a look here Thumbs Up CSEP-2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
saru Posted April 24, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted April 24, 2011 Have just taken the plunge and ordered one to improve the grip on the camera. Spent sometime considering the Leica grip, but cost is an issue so went with the Thumbs Up.Am I going to be disappointed? Â I got my CSEP-2 a week ago and i was excited about the improvement. It gives the cam a perfect grip, so you can shoot one-handed without fear of dropping your x1. I was surprised how such a little thing can make this difference. Solar B Posted April 24, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted April 24, 2011 Im also interested in a Thumbs up ...but are they not more expensive than the Leica Handgrip ?..... which i already use. Â Also will they in time mark the X1 ... as i have seen an image of an M8or9 marked after using one. Â Brian
Paul Hart Posted April 24, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted April 24, 2011 The CSEP-2 is the only add-on I have on my X1. It greatly enhances handling, and renders the comparatively bulky Leica handgrip completely unnecessary. Â There's no sign of it marking my (black) X1 so far. If the retaining screw is tightened to prevent movement of the TU relative to the camera, I doubt there will be any.
prk60091 Posted April 24, 2011 Share #5  Posted April 24, 2011 I have used the thumbs up since December  In short it increases the usability of the x1 I can now hold it comfortably just inches from my eye a more natural position for me to shoot with, I use It along with the wrist strap.  It is VERY IMPORTANT not to overtighten the hex nut in the hot shoe. Clemgill Posted April 25, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted April 25, 2011 I have been using mine for 6 months, very handy but I just discovered that the upper plate of the X1 is getting a bit loose... Probably not designed to whitstand the torque induced by the Thumbs-up in the vertical axis. I removed it since. Did anybody encoutered similar issue? Â Thx. paulpp Posted April 25, 2011 Author Share #7 Â Posted April 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Worrying if the top-plate is becoming loose but I suppose it is difficult to identify cause and effect. Will keep my fingers crossed.
ChiILX1 Posted April 25, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted April 25, 2011 I have been using mine for 6 months, very handy but I just discovered that the upper plate of the X1 is getting a bit loose... Probably not designed to whitstand the torque induced by the Thumbs-up in the vertical axis. I removed it since. Did anybody encoutered similar issue? Â Thx. Â Whoa- I guess that settles it for THIS THREAD everybody. As you can see, I had the same issue. First the TU gets a bit loose, so you tighten it, next thing you know the top plate is separating. Â Interesting that I wasn't the only one. It can't be emphasized enough to NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE HEX.
Clemgill Posted April 26, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted April 26, 2011 My conclusion is that the TU may be OK for an M8 or M9 as their construction is much more robust, but certainly not for the X1. The top plate of the X1 is very thin and probably loosely fixed. Too much stress is transfrerred by the TU in the vertical direction especially when the protrusion of the TU is abruptly sollicited (ex: in and out of pocket) Bottom line: I don't recommend fixing a TU on the X1 when the camera is extensively used. Â My 2 cents.
paulpp Posted April 28, 2011 Author Share #10 Â Posted April 28, 2011 Well mine arrived today - very quick delivery. First impressions are that it is very well engineered and certainly improves handling. Will keep my fingers crossed (although not when handling the X1 !!) Backpage Posted April 28, 2011 Share #11  Posted April 28, 2011 I just wrap the strap around my wrist. I've done this with every camera I've ever owned...SLRs and Ms.  Given I had a camera in each hand, I hope the attached pic shows you what I mean. Welcome, dear visitor! Â i did that prior to purchasing the thumbsup and wrist strap----> there is a world of difference in handling between wrapping the neck strap and the thumbsup-- just my opinion-yours may be different
Backpage Posted April 28, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted April 28, 2011 @ lazaruz - You're right, whatever works. And the strap works for me. Plus, adding the Thumbs Up and putting the viewfinder on top creates other issues.
paulpp Posted May 4, 2011 Author Share #14 Â Posted May 4, 2011 Well as the person who started this thread I thought I would end it (?) by saying I find the Thumbs Up a great addition - makes handling the camera much better.

gDallasK Posted May 16, 2011 Share #16 Â Posted May 16, 2011 I've been a long term userbof Thumbs Up devices - M8, M9 and now my X1. Very happy with the M models but disappointed that the small spring steel plate intended to hold the viewfinder in place has come loose and rattles. I would not have expected that given the relatively high price of the device. Â However, the camera top plate is still secure!
