Remote firing

Are there any remote triggers that will fire a digital M from 500ft away. I can not use any mechanical linkage. A pocket wizard springs to mind, I have no experience of them will they trigger a M OK?

One way is to attach a solenoid to the cable release socket. Here's how: Electronic Shutter Release

Otherwise it should be possible to "tether" the camera to a remote computer by carrying the USB connection over a booster cable or wireless link.

To put it another way, it'd be a lot simpler to use a DSLR for which wireless remote control units are made.

I don't think that they work with "M"s though. :( (Not that I would ever willingly wish to be that far away from my camera. Some bu**er might 'liberate' it!)

I have personally used a Pocket Wizard on my M8 for 100's of exposures. All you need is a Flash hot shoe to place the transmitter.

The OP didn't ask about flash but about firing the shutter remotely. Can the Pocket Wizard receiver release the M8 shutter?

Got it, my bad!

In order to use the PW you would need a motor drive and motor drive port which the M doesn't have.

Thank you all. It looks like my excuse for an M has just vanished, pitty it was winning on weight by a huge margin. It's looking likely for my needs like a modified Sony (throwing away the prism) will be the best bet.

I would have thought that a straightforward modeller's remote control system would be usable with a little modification. Its a long time since I looked at such things but operating the shutter release via a servo should be straightforward enough.
