hello everybody...

this week, a good friend of mine, gave me a leicaflex sl2, together with a summicron 50mm f/2, a 180mm elmarit-r 2.8, a macro-elmar f/4-100 together wit a bellow, together with some elpro near focusrings and some other extension tubes...(all leitz-wetzlar) everything came in the original boxes, with all certficates, bills, original manual and so on..

i am trying to learn a lot about this camera, and i found out, that this one is from 1973.. (from the serialnumber..)

is it also possible to find out the age of the lenses, when i would give the serialnumbers?? (or any other of this stuff?)

which kind of b/w film do you use?? i have now kodak tmax100 in this camera, but maybe some analog users prefer other film...

i am a complete newbie with leica, and i want to not only shoot nice pics with it, but also find out, the history of this camera...

my last question: do i need to insure this camera and this lenses and other stuff, since i looked around the internet, but prices are very different, and i don;t have any clue about what everything is worth..

i like this camera a lot, it is in mint condition, as the former owner did not use it much.. (as my friend told to me..)

a lot of questions from my side, i am sorry, but everything is very new to me, so that is why i subscribed to this forum..

thank you very much!

...welcome to the forum, Alex. I have tried to address the points you raised.

For details relating to the production year of your lenses, click here.

Your journey with black and white films starts now. Film preference is highly subjective, and you will eventually arrive at your preferred choice through experimenting. Your Kodak TMax 100 is a great start, and I recommend sticking with it until you begin to understand a bit more exactly what you are seeking to achieve with your equipment. You must shoot to build your knowledge base - discussions and/or research are no substitute for experience. And may the gods be with you if you decide to start doing your own developing and printing, for that opens up another level of experimenting.

There are numerous repositories of Leica information all over the inernet. You may start here, but I strongly suggest using one of the more popular search engines to support your research.

As with everything valuable, insurance is recommended. I am unable to provide assistance with pricing, but there are other forum members better suited to comment on this point. Hopefully you will hear from them.

Photography, whatever your particular interest or angle (and there are many), can be an absolute joy. The good news is that it is a lot easier than it sounds. And the bad news? Well, you tell us.

This forum is a superb resource for anything Leitz- or Leica-related. Yes, you will come across some comments/opinions/assertions that you agree with, and others that really p*ss you off. That is the beauty of the forum, if you can learn to live with it.

Hope this helps - now go out there and shoot. :D

You are very lucky and I wish you good health with your recent acquisition. I recently looked into the subject of insurance for my cameras and I am covered on all risks for any item under £1500.00. I had to clarify with them that they classed a body and a lens as two separate items which they did so that meant all parts of my camera kit were covered. We opted for More Th^n but I am sure others do the same but it is worth asking the question.

With regard to film. It might be worth loading some Fuji Neopan 400CN 400 asa film to start with. Companies like Jessops will process this in an hour and return to you 36- 7" X 5'"glossy B&W prints. This will at least give you a good basis to work from until you get the bug and start processing your own.

Are they able to supply neutral prints without being prodded with a stick? I only ask because ever print I've ever had from them using XP2 has been green or sepia.

As for the cameras, the original poster is a very lucky person indeed.

thank you very much for your helpfull replies..!! sometimes, i think i am still dreaming... it is a wonderful gift! i am already one week busy with this camera and it is very nive to work with... she gave it to me, as it was collecting dust, and part of the deal was, that i would use it, where it was orininally made for.. take pictures with it... and i am going to do it!! camera;s need to be used, just like an old aeroplane, which is at the most beautiful when it;s flying...instead of staying in a museum..or in a box..

i love this camera.. more than my dslr... i have some other 'old school'camera;s, just like my dads mamiya sekor and a zenit EM, which i also use, next to the digital stuff..

i like the 'old-school' stuff more..;) always did, and always will be..

i am going to look very well after this camera and the lenses, for me they are very prescious, it has a history and it is also so very well engineered.. i love it..! heavy, sturdy, and precisely... just the way i like it..

for the moment now, i am still learning the camera, and i use the summicron 50mm and the elmarit 180 mostly.. the macro-elmar f/4-100 i still have to learn about, since i do not have any experience wit macro.. but it is together, with the bellow also a nice piece of equipment..(and i'm soon going to experiment with this beautiful stuff)

a lot to learn still.. i like the very bright viewfinder... the sturdy controls, and how good and sharp the lenses are..

again, thx for all the help!

grtz, Alex!

Hi Alex,

It is really a nice present which was given you.

You are going to be able to make nice photos with all this equipment.

I have another old Leicaflex SL with Summicron 50 (since 1969)who is always functional and that I use from time to time with several R macro and tele lens.

For films, love you colour or black and white?

If it is colour, try Fuji Superia 100 or the new Kodak Ektar 100

For the black and white T Max as you do or Ilford Delta 100 Pro

For insurance, I have an insurance of the house which assures against flight

Good photos

Henry

hey!! THX!! for your reply! i saw this photograph of your leicaflex yesterday! i have exactly the same one! i am going to shoot mostly in black/white film, but from time to time i'm also going to use some colour-film ofcourse..

long time ago, my father was also a photgrapher, and he shot mostly in black/white, and developed everything himself in his darkroom.. countless times i was there together with him.. it was beautiful...and i learned from him, to develop film myself..

i inherited his old mamiya sekor 1000dtl, and i still use it..(from time to time) and occasionally i use my old-school zenit EM.. however, i do not have so much stuff left of this dark room, it was all very old (1968), so i am going to try to find second hand darkroom stuff...as i told, it is all so long time ago, i am a little bit rusty, and for the time being i bring my film to a very old photographer, who is going to develop the film for me... my friend, who gave this leicaflex to me, also proposed to me, to develop some film in her darkroom, so that i can learn some forgotten stuff again..

these are very happy times for me... back to basics... i also shoot a lot with my dslr, but this is just more fun!!

and that is what it's all about!!

grtz, Alex!!

p.s.. it is indeed not a leicaflex sl2, it is an sl, it is a three cam-model, from 1973...i am going to make a picture from it, with just the body, and without the lens..

thanks to you all for the great help!! i am walking on clouds, already since one week, i am so happy, i cannot explain it!!

F1 is with the summicron 50mm F/2

F2 is the 'naked' camera

F3 is with the bellow and the macro-elmar 100mm f/4

F4 is with the elmarit 180mm f/2.8

i took the pics with my sony a200+sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and a very old tokina.. i don't use it so much anymore since i have this wonderful old camera...the red dot reminds me of my minolta and sony... coincidence???

grtz, Alex!!

today i had my first roll of testshots developed... i experimented very much with DOF and so on... it was razorsharp!! at every aperture, and the DOF and bokeh are wonderfull!! i love smooth bokeh, and i always thought that my 70-210 minolta beercan gave wonderful bokeh, but with this 50mm or 180mm we are now talking about something very different!! :) sharpness is also outreagious!!

what a joy!!

however, some pics did seem a little bit dark, not underexposed, far from that..(and i put the meter exactly on it's place, where it should be..) they still looked very well, but i think that, the replacement battery for the lightmeter could be the problem... i read that it can give a slightly off/metering, due to a little bit more voltage or something???, so i think i have to overexpose a little bit.. not much, just a little bit..(or let a specialist make some adjustments.. but i do not know what it is going to cost..)

very nice and warm colours though... i like warm colours...i do not know why, but i love it..

very nice everything.. these pics are not worthy to place here... it is colour film, and only for testing... it is now time for the more serious work.. black and white, that is...

i am astonished by the sharpness of the summicron 50mm.. i always want to see things first, before i start to believe things.. but my expectations came true..

very beautiful!!

and a joy to work with!

grtz, Alex!!

Alex:

A Leicaflex SL cannot be a 3-cam camera, although it can use 3-cam lenses. A Leicaflex SL can use 1-cam, 2-cam and 3-cam lenses, but not 3rd-cam only and ROM lenses.

1 and 2-cam lenses are cheaper on the used market, but cannot be used on later 3-cam Leicas (R3 - R9)

hello!! thx for your reply!! it is very usefull!! i see 3 holes in the bajonet, and all my lenses have 3 (i do not know anymore how to call them..oops..) maybe it is 3 lug?? my english is not so good, since it is long time that i was at school..i do not know a lot about this camera, but what is the difference in cams?? i am very interested...

as i told, my english is not to good, i am from holland, so every info is more than welcome!!

i also have a panagor 200mm f/3.5, together with a 2x vivitar converter... the lens and the converter fit very well, but i cannot put it on this leicaflex... maybe some part is missing??

i think i am going to need some ring or something to fit it..it also has 3 lugs, but they seem to be 'female'kind, so i cannot put it on..

i guess it had to be some adapter ring for it or something.....

not that i am going to use it a lot as i have already the 180mm 2.8 wich seems to be much better..

thx for your help!!

grtz, Alex!!
