Zeiss Flektogon 20mm/4.0 on the M8

Today I mounted a Flektogon 20mm/4.0 in M42 (Pentax) mount with a converter from Cameraquest on the M8. The depth of field is so great that guesstimating the distance and using the DOF scale of the lens is enough, rangefinder focusing is not really nececcary. Here are a few results form a Sunday afternoon walk in the countryside.

All photos taken at f/5.6 Aperture priority - RAW converted with C1 and resized in PS CS2

There is no vignetting at all, sharpness is very good in the center, still good in the corners. Contrast is lower than in most modern lenses, but I like the dreamy color rendition. The lens has an enormous front element and is subject to flare if direct light or the sun is in the picture.

Peter - does that lens have an auto-diaphragm?

Yes, Mark

If so, does the adapter keep the aperture pin on the M42 lens depressed so that in effect the lens becomes a manual?

Yes, it works exactly like a normal Leica lens, except it is not rangefinder coupled

BTW, I also have a vintage Nikkor 20mm/4.0 lens, in the Nikon world this is regarded as their best 20mm and it still fetches good prices . I just received the adapter, also from Cameraquest and I shall take it out for an informal test. I shall report the results on this forum, too

Amazing photos. The depth of field is spectacular. Would make a great 30 x 40 print.

Thank you Steve, the DOF is indeed spectacular. Here another one that shows this perhaps even better.

Hi Peter,

As you may know (it was part of my my review of wides on Canon FF) I have a Flek 20/2.8 that I use on the Canon 5D primarily for architecture. Very nice lens with low macro contrast. I also very much like the way it draws.

I'd prefer the other 21mm RF lenses on the M8 but I like your resourceful approach and I love to see people experimenting with unexpected combinations.

Cheers,

Sean

Thank you for your comments, Sean and John.

I made one single comparison shot today of the Flektogon vs the Nikkor 20mm. The Nikkor is sharper and has higher contrast, but would not give this "dreamy" rendition the Flektogon achieves

This is the beast. It takes away quite a bit of the image in the viewer

Yesterday I took out the Nikkor 20mm/4.0. You can see some shots here

Very interesting. I have the MC version of this lens, and had not seriously considered using it on my M8. Have you had the chance to compare this lens to any of the M lenses in the same range? Do you have a picture of the M8 with the Flektogon on it, from above?

Great shots, Peter. I just noticed that yours is the f/4 version. Mine is f/2.8 MC. I wonder how they compare...
Thank you Carsten. I like the low contrast of this lens, which makes for highlights that are not easily burnt out. You can always increase the contrast in post-processing, like I did with the flowered window. Another shot below. The 2.8 MC is supposed to be better, less flare through the multi-coating. I am looking for one myself, but even the 4.0 is a very useful lens and I discover a new way of photographing. Have you used yours on the M8?

No, I don't have an adapter, and I already have a CV15, which covers my wide-angle needs pretty well. I will pick up a 28, but I don't think I will fill the gap between those unless it really bothers me. I want to have a kit which I can carry always: CV15, 28/2 Asph, 50/1.4 Asph, and one of the 75s, probably the Lux. I also have an older 135/2.8 but this is more to play with.

I might keep the Flektogon as a just-in-case lens. They don't sell for that much anyway, and it does need lubing.
