IkarusJohn Posted May 11, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I thought it might be helpful to start a thread specifically on this lens (the others are comparisons or variously scattered through other discussions). The Imatest results for the lens are published elsewhere, but to be honest I found these less than informative. Has Leica published MTF charts? More critically, has anyone carried out a detailed review of this lens yet? Sean Reid has reviewed the Leica T with his usual stock of cv lenses (of limited interest), and with the 35 Summicron ASPH I am very curious to understand why Sean makes such a big deal of focusing lenses open, and then stopping them down. He makes three recommendations for focusing the Leica T with manual focus lenses: On a tripod (WTF?) focused open, then stopped down for exposure - this isn't a field camera! If I want a huge, detailed landscape image, I'll use a Monochrom. I can really only see myself using this camera with a table tripod if I want to be in the picture myself, or I want a static series of images. Scale focused, with aperture set - I understand why Gerry Winogrand might have done this for street photography, but my experience of this is that if you want a subject in really crisp focus (what Leica is about), then this is not the best method Handheld, focused wide, then stopped down, with the risk the composition may change Boy, this makes photography hard. What about just selecting the aperture you want and focusing through the EVF or on the screen? In the days of SLRs, the aperture was stopped down because it was very difficult (dark) to focus on the ground glass screen with the final aperture - even with fresnel rings and split imaging. My experience with the NEX and A7 is that as you stop down, the camera brightens the image. The only risk I can see with this is that you might miss the best point of focus, but that is what the magnifier is about. More pictures without subjects, fairs and agricultural shows with lots of backs of heads and comparisons with cameras no longer in production or lenses which are really not that relevant to Leica owners, and an impossible user interface (with Flash) that I can't use on my iPad. You can guess I'm regretting renewing my subscription. Someone give this camera and lens to Tim Ashley - I'll pay for the review! Cheers John
