S (Typ 006) Shutter Release

Greetings all,

I am so pleased to be able to work with an S camera, but would appreciate knowing if my experience with the shutter release is unusual, and I may need to have the camera sent to Leica for adjustment.

The "pressure point," or "2nd pressure point," as it is sometimes called in the Instructions, is very difficult, almost impossible for me to discern. This is the position which stores focus (and/or exposure) once set, to allow re-framing. I have used similar systems on other cameras, and have had absolutely no problem finding and using this intermediate shutter release position.

Not so with the S, however. Consequently, in addition to being a major distraction from taking a picture, I often mistakenly trigger the shutter, trying to find and hold the "pressure point," or even more annoying, the camera resets focus as soon as I re-frame. Very occasionally the focus stores, as it should.

I don't think I'm particularly ham-fisted about this, and have never had any issue with similar focus protocols on other cameras (Pentax MF, Nikon D).

Given the obvious care Leica has gone to in order to make a camera stripped down to its essentials, to permit maximum concentration on creativity, I can't believe this release should be so tricky.

So I'd appreciate any feedback from S users. I've conveyed my concern to my dealer, and am waiting to hear what his rep, etc. have to say.

Thank you!

Consider assigning the AF function to the rear thumb button. The camera is set to manual focus, and when you press the thumb button, it then performs AF … holding the thumb button locks the focus for recomposing … leaving the shutter button as shutter trigger.

BTW, the AF function is faster when shooting this way.

Perfect timing for this thread as I was just loaned an S for three days of shooting. Since I had only read through the manual the evening before I obviously started from scratch too. Yes of course that is entirely my responsibility when taking a new camera to shoots that were important (just for me). It was a wonderful opportunity though.

I saw exactly what you mentioned about the AF lock and the three stage shutter release. I ended up taking first pressure on the release until I had confirmation and then holding in the (configurable) joystick before recomposing. The answers, I've just found on chatting with the friendly Leica guy on equipment return.

If you select the MF mode the joystick can be used to as a single control to both activate and lock AF, depending on your configurations in the custom menu. In that respect it operates like other pro dSLRS with the the option to use a button on the back.

That sounds counter-intuitive but I guess comes from the relationship between AF and the ability to immediately use MF at any time as well.

By the way , unsurprisingly I found that the sensor and the Summarit 70 are just ridiculously good.

Yep, that's what I do, too (on my S2). I'd just add that you set the camera in the MF mode when you do this. Then it doesn't refocus unless you press the rear thumb button again.
