Does SF-58 Work With Quantum Battery Pack?

I've got a Quantum Turbo SC external battery battery that I use with a Metz 54MZ-3 for faster recycle times. The cord that runs to the flash from the battery pack has a plug that also fits the external power source plug on the SF-58. I tried it and when both were powered up I first got a message on the SF-58's LCD panel saying 'Battery Pack' (or something similar) and then a flashing image of an empty battery. I didn't like the look of that so I turned them both off.

I emailed Quantum and they said they have not tested their batteries with an SF-58 so they couldn't offer any recommendations. I have emailed Metz and have not yet got a response.

Does anyone here have any helpful knowledge? The user guide that came with the flash seems to be silent on this subject.

FYI, I just got this response from Metz:

Dear Mr Baron,

Thank you for your email enquiry of 26 August 2009.

To prevent any damages of the flash units "Metz 54 MZ-3" and "Leica SF-58" we do not recommend to use third-party power packs like the mentioned "Quantum Turbo SC battery back". Unfortunately, for this reason we can't give any advice for the connection of those power packs.

For an external power supply of the mentioned flash units "Metz 54 MZ-3" and "Leica SF-58" we only recommend the "Metz Power Pack P76".

To connect "Metz Power Pack P76" to the flash unit "Metz 54 MZ-3" we recommend the "Connection Cord V 54-50".

To connect "Metz Power Pack P76" to the flash unit "Leica SF-58" we recommend the "Connection Cord V 58-50".

We hope that this information has been of help to you and remain

With kind regards

And I see the Metz power pack is only $399.95 at B&H.

Plus the cord.

<sigh>

I was lucky to get a demo from Amazon for $250. It works very good btw. Will last a 10 hour wedding with heavy flash and still has some left. Holds about twice the juice as the older P50 did which was no slouch either.

The SF58 looks like the other AF58's they make for Nikon and Canon. If they work with the Quantum it very likely will also work with the SF58.

Cheers,

Michiel, you did get a good deal. Maybe I should start looking there.

The Quantum Turbo SC fits in a shirt pocket. I can't seem to find dimensions for the P76. Is it that small or does it need to hang from a strap?

Regards,
