weird things..

after an extensive usage of my M8 since last year, weird things started to happen to my M8 lately!.. have a look at this!

i've never had any of those problems like "light streaks" or "hot pixels" in the past, and the camera was working completely fine so far.. but now- all of a sudden!!? - (maybe after the new firmware 1.201, dunno) it looks like i have some problems in the sensor.

any idea, anyone please?? I am disappointed really, i used to think that i was one of the luck guys who did not have any problems that people had in the past..

looks like my M8 needs a complete check up when i send it for the upgrade in August!

what bothers me the most is not the light streaks from the light source on the left, (because i know this well known issue) but the hot pixel (blue vertical line) on the right side of the picture... I did not notice any other light streaks after this image, but the "hot pixel line" (or whatever it is) is in my every image more or less now for some unknown reason!??

The green streak is caused by the light leaking in at the edge of the sensor and corrupting the pixels which provide a black reference and which are meant to be in the dark.

As for the blue streak, this is a pretty tough exposure situation, lots of noise, are you pushing an under-exposed image in PP? That tends to exacerbate sensor issues, but if you are seeing this in fully exposed images, it does sound like there's a sensor problem.

The blue line is a circuit board issue. It happened to mine. Seems to be exaggerated in high ISO shots. Also, in normal ISO if you have Lightroom or ACR take either your Fill Light slider or Recovery slider and push one or both (I forget which) all the way to the right and you can often get it to show up.

The really scary thing is how many of these M8's will eventually go bad in time. Compared to Canon's & Nikon's top-priced cameras, so many M8's are in the hands of low-volume shooters, that a lot of people may end up experiencing major breakdowns after there warrantys expire. A few of them will pay there $1500 or so to get the "upgrade" and extend there warranty but still, it's scary to think just because you've got a good working M8 for a year, it still has a pretty good chance of going bad.

Thanks a lot William, yes you are right really; it shows up in every ISO when i push the Fill light slider all the way to the right!

Somehow its not easy to see though, but its there... so are you still living with this 'circuit board' issue, or you already sent it to Solms for a fix?

Hi Mark,

thanks for the reply, Yes, I just pushed an under-exposed image in PP here.. it generally looks 'ok' in a fully exposed image though.. but as William put it out as a 'circuit board problem'; that blue streak, in fact, is in every ISO when you view them in PS or LightRoom closely..

so, i think, it seems to me that every sensor,- no matter what- have more or less these similar issues maybe, who knows?..

Nerve - setting aside the green streak (well documented issue), isn't the problem with this picture that the exposure choices you made haven't succeeded? If we accept that exposure is always a compromise, it looks like by trying to get the face of the foreground subject visibile, everything else has fallen apart. Film, digital, pinhole camera, this is going to be a truth. Screw up on the exposure and however much latitude your medium gives you, it's never going to be as good as a shot where the balance of exposure, iso etc had been correctly set. I don't think you can blame the M8 here.

Best

I've tried to adjust the light settings a little bit, as far as it was possible. However, the problem with the streaks remains.

Best, Peter.

I had it fixed in New Jersey.
