I have a 560 Telyt f5.6 that I have used with the M8 & got surprisingly good results

I would like to get an IR/cut filter for this, but it takes a Serie VII drop in

this measures 50 mm inner diameter

I doubt anyone will be making one of these soon, so I am considering using a 49 mm & gluing it in

anyone with alternate ideas ...the tolerance of the drop in slot is pretty tight, but the width of the filter slot looks like a standard filter should work fine

49mm B+W filter glass will fit Leitz Series-VII filter ring. The Leitz has spanner slots and is easy to remove the glass, the B+W doesn't so unless you have a steady hand with a Dreml you probably want to get someone else to do that part. Also possible is grinding off the female threads of the 49mm filter so it's thin enough to pass through the slot in the lens.

It is easy to grind the female threads off any filter ... remove the glass (normally held in with just a circlip) and then using a circular motion rub the front part mount on a piece of medium grade abrasive paper ... after a couple of minutes the female thread part of the mount ie the front will be ground away leaving just a flat anulus ,,, finish off with fine abrasive paper ... paint the shiny metal with a Staedtler permanent marker pen and reassemble the filter glass.

I have made several thin filters using this technique to fit my 50mm Summilux M ... so that the lens hood fits properly.

  • 2 weeks later...

the solution was simpler than I would have thought

I purchased a BW slim 49 mm filter after measuring the Serie VII, figuring it would be better to err on keeping it smaller & that I could always shim the filter if I needed

as it turns out, the slim is actually wider than the the regular filter ...the slim refers of course not to the width of the lens, but its height ...it would not fit

I had a 49 mm BW chrome filter that I used on a black 90 'cron older version ...I had to get it off a 48-49 step up ring (had to freeze the lens & use the rubber sole technique ...if at all possible avoid cheap step up rings:) )

the regular 49 fits in the slot as if it were made for it!

no opticians fitting lenses or filing off filter threads needed

I am quite pleased

the slim 49 is doing duty on the 90 'chron where it looks better & the lens cap that came with it makes this a neater package than the Leica lens cap which wobbled as the thicker filter protruded too far for a solid fit

I am a happy camper & wanted to share this information with you all
