Hello all

I'm still going backward and forwards on the Coolscan 5000. Despite the recession the price of these units has risen almost 50% in New Zealand since December, due to a weakening NZ dollar. Really makes me think twice.

I do have one question. How well does the 5000 work on Macs. I have a MacBookPro with 2.0 Dual processor. I think I recall reading on this site that their were software issues.

Best and thanks

I have the 5000 and works fine on my iMac with Vuescan and Silverfast. Nikonscan is very temperamental - sometimes works sometimes doesn't :( Apparently Nikon have discontinued the 5000 and its prices are suffering from the "Noctilux Factor"

I have a 5000, and the machine works very well. As for software on a Mac, I tried both Nikonscan and Vuescan, on an Intel IMac. I found out that I preferred Nikonscan's results, not least because I tend to scan simple raw 16 bit TIFFs and process them later, either in Photoshop or in Aperture. But, Nikonscan on the Intel IMac has been an absolute nightmare, crashing more often than not.

I then remembered I had an old PowerPC IMac lying around, still running OS-X 10.4. I installed Nikonscan there, connected the scanner to effectively make a dedicated scanning station, and everything has been working like a breeze since then. Nikonscan is, on this platform, rock-solid, and I have been scanning hundreds of slides or negatives in sequence with never a crash or anything funny.

Good luck with the scanning!
