Opinion of the 90mm Elmarit-M 2.8

My peeve is it goes soft under 6 feet like the last two generations of 90 Summicron including the ASPH. Leica used to admit this in their literature. Now I am not talking soft focus soft, just not sharp like distance.

The new 90 Elmar does not do this.

Leica does not put out much informative literature any more. They want you to assume their products are perfect.

I've heard good things about it. I recently picked up a 90 and decided to go with the Macro Elmar M. It was between that or the 90 Summarit. I found a Summarit used for $700, which is a hair more than what the Elmarit-M goes for, but it was basically new, smaller, faster, and 6-bit coded. So the Summarit won over the Elmarit-M for me. On the other hand, the Macro Elmar M was even smaller, focused closer, and was optimized for close work. It sounds like a lot of the Leica 90's go a little soft close in, and that the Macro Elmar M doesn't. Since I planned on using the 90 closer in most of the time and also appreciated the even smaller size, the Macro Elmar M was the one for me.

But, the Elmarit-M sounds like a great lens that you can pick up for not too much.

Gary,

Erwin Puts in his "Leica Lens Compendium" says the last version of the 90 Elmarit-M, made after 1990, is vastly improved, and it's close-up performance is as good as it's excellent infinity performance. I have one, and it is superb!

My scanning isn't the best...

What do people think of this lens and what would be their favourite use for it? Trying to decide whether to get one for my M6.

It's my most used 90mm lens (I also have f2 and f4 versions of the 90mm variety). Great combination of compact size, optical quality and moderate weight. Ideal as a travel lens, if you ask me. And it has a built-in hood, unlike the new Summarit.

used one for several years, traded it in for the new 75 2.5 which I prefer for wedding portraiture and general use. It's a bit on the softer side but a great lense and if your eyesight is good, not bad with a .72, preferably with a .85 finder. After many years using my m6 , and now mp, I think that 90mm is a tad too much for the m-system camera, hence why I stopped down to the 75 mm.

Happy shooting,

I love mine. I'm a ZM fan, but the 4/85 Tele-Tessar wasn't announced yet and even when it was I still prefer the Leica lens. It's a full stop faster at f/2.8 yet still about the same size (which is pretty compact, all things considered). Price-wise it's also a bargain, IMO. Good bargain for a really nice lens.
