Joachim123 Posted April 2, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got back from a trip to Louisianna and processed two rolls of slide film. Some of the slides have a red line right though the frame. Does anyone know the cause of this? Only on some of the frames. Customs told me that their xray machine does not harm the film. I dont believe them.
Advertisement Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hi Joachim123, Take a look here Red Line on Slide Film. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted April 2, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 2, 2009 Customs told me that their xray machine does not harm the film. I dont believe them. Why not? X-Ray contamination wouldn't consist of a straight line, and it wouldn't only affect some frames.
Joachim123 Posted April 2, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted April 2, 2009 Thats what I thought. All the frames are good except for a few. I looks to me like the processing equipment may be at fault? The frames that I am talking about are properly exposed, but some have a yellow line horizontal and some have a red line vertical? Really frustrating. On the roll of about 36 about four have this problems the rest are fine.
andybarton Posted April 2, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 2, 2009 Definitely not x-rays I flew home last Thursday and my M7 and film were in my shoulder bag. The bag in front got stuck on the way out of the machine, leaving my bag in the x-rays fir much longer than usual. There have been no problems with the films I have processed so far. Take your slides back to the processor and ask their opinion Can you post a scan so we can see for ourselves?
Joachim123 Posted April 2, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted April 2, 2009 I found out that possibly there may be a light leak around the film indicator window. I called Leica service and they were quite helpful. Not an expensive repair.

Is the line on the film itself, or is it a scanning issue? I've had this problem with scans, but never the actual film. If it's a scanning thing, just have them done again. If not, I can't be much help.
Joachim123 Posted April 3, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted April 3, 2009 Found out that the problem was the seals need to be replaced in my R4 not a costly repair, but I already miss my best friend. Thanks for all the help.
andybarton Posted April 3, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 3, 2009 Yes R4 you are right. Had to be. Notorious for rotting light seals, but fortunately, very cheap to sort out.

Thanks for all the help. Good to know what the problem is. Here's hoping you'll have it back soon. I burned the shutter in my MP a while back and was without it for a couple of months...
