Hood for 35 Summicron

Lens Hood 12538 is for the f/1 Noctilux-M, not the Summicron.

The old 12585 hood will do for either 35mm or 50mm Summicron lenses with a 42mm external mount diameter. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help, Tim, but I don't think this is right. The #12538 I have (from Leitz, Canada) fits perfectly on the 50 Summicron (and the 35 Summicron, for that matter) and I think the Noctilux is way bigger. Besides, it bears the marking «M2/50» which, in my mind, means «M camera (mount), 50 mm, f/2» But, thanks anyway.

Olivier,

Yes, you're quite right. I had got that from Denis Laney's Collectors Guide, but having taken a second look it also lists the 12538 as being for the 50mm 'cron (1979-94 version). Checking a second book reveals that the Nocti claim is a rare misprint, which should read 12539 - now ammended in my copy! :) Thanks for that.

The Laney book does list the 12538 hood in a section "For 50mm and 35mm lenses". However, most of the other hoods under that heading; the ITDOO, IROOA/12571, and 12585 are all specified for both focal lengths, whilst the 12538 and 12539 only mention the 50mm lenses (though my second source also says the 12539 was the hood for the first type 75mm 'lux).

As the hood fits, the best way to find out surely is to take one or two test shots under conditions which will show up any vignetting (if it exists).

As far as I know, the only difference between the 12585 hood and the 12538 hood is that the former is metal, whereas the latter is plastic. Their size and shape is about as identical as it gets, with the 12538 hood having two see-through apertures while the 12585 has three. Both hoods were designed to be used with 50 and 35mm lenses.

Cheers,

Andy

Did a google on this same question and found my way here.

Hi everyone, newbie here, though not so newbie to phototgraphy or Leica.

There appear to be two hoods (specifically) that'll fit the 50 and 35 crons, 12585 and 12585H. And I'm buggered if I know the difference as they both look identical in pictures and online articles or descriptions. Both are black and metal, too.

Except for ONE thing. The H has an ADDITIONAL inscription for 1:2/35.

example eBay auction for 12585H

I have a 12585 for my 2/50 cron which is identical (did I say identical?) to the above example, except that it lacks the 6th inscription, mine has only the other five, with a gap space for the 1:2/35.

I'm itching to find out if I can use my 12585 on the 2/35M2 I just ordered. I expect that I can, given the physical dims and diameter of the hood and will certainly be trying it out on f2 in various situations to make sure. Even if I get vignetting at f2 I'd say there's little problems with f2.8 and above (or below depending on your view of things), though it should fit OK.

Can't think of what the H stands for.

Will let you know how I get on.

12504 would be safer. All the Leica-supplied round hoods for the special edition 35/2 ASPH's use an identical hood to the 12504 except that they don't unscrew to fit a Series VII filter.

12504 was originally fitted to both the 35/2 II and 35//1.4 non-ASPH. Leica say that all but the new square ones can vignette, but I don't believe this based on past experience with my 35/2 II. Have used it on my LHSA 35/2 ASPH without problems.
