symmetron Posted April 28, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a Nikon LS-IV scanner and am thinking of upgrading to a Plustek 7600, but am unsure if there will be a noticeable improvement in scan quality. I run Mac OS 10.6 with Parallels also running WinXP. Consequently, I currently use the LS-IV in WinXP using Nikon Scan 4.0.2, but would need to purchase Vuescan ($79) to run it on my Mac partition. The Plustek (~$500) is OS 10.6 compatible and it runs Silverfast which supports Mac and WinXP. If I stayed with the Nikon LS-IV, I might possibly purchase Vuescan ($79), which seems pretty good based on reviews. Does anyone have experience with Nikon Scan versus Vuescan? Need advice. tgray Posted April 28, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 28, 2010 I don't think I'd go from a IV to a Plustek. Upgrade to a V, 4000, or 5000 if you can. I use Vuescan all the time with my V. Great stuff. I prefer Nikonscan for color stuff and Vuescan for B&W. Nikonscan just does a better job with ICE and I feel like it gives me better color out of the box to start working with. symmetron Posted April 28, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted April 28, 2010 Although it's workable in WinXP, using the Vuescan in Mac OS would be much more convenient so long as there were no drawbacks in IQ.
tgray Posted April 28, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 28, 2010 I run Nikonscan and Vuescan on a new Macbook pro running 10.6. No issues here.
wparsonsgisnet Posted April 28, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 28, 2010 I used to have an LS-30 and used VueScan with it. The VueScan results were superior to those of the Nikon software by a factor! I am now using a Minolta Elite II, also with VueScan. VueScan is undoubtedly the best bargain in digital photog. ALL upgrades are free and the software is updated constantly. Highly recommended! symmetron Posted April 28, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted April 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) tgray, Are you running Nikon Scan on 10.6? IF so, what version?
tgray Posted April 28, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 28, 2010 4.0.whatever is the newest one. I downloaded 4 and the update from the Nikon site. Oh and 10.6.3. 10.6 was installed on the computer when I got it.
symmetron Posted April 28, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted April 28, 2010 I went with the Pro Vuescan. Couldn't get Nikon Scan on to my Mac. Thanks all.
ndjambrose Posted April 28, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 28, 2010 I run OSX 10.6.3 on an aluminum iMac. Both Nikon Scan 4.0.0 and Vuescan 8.6.02 work for me with zero problems. Both give good results and I couldn't choose between them for quality. Batch scanning is a little faster in Vuescan. Colour fidelity and corrections are a little better in Nikon Scan. Take your pick. symmetron Posted April 28, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted April 28, 2010 For some reason, whenever I tried to download the mac version, the download would select and open my WinXP partition to install it there. Must be some issue with Parallels.
holmes Posted April 29, 2010 Share #12 Posted April 29, 2010 When I went to replace my flatbed film scanner I settled on a Canon CanoScan 8800F. Simple to set up. The results have to be seen to believed. I am constantly amazed every time I scan. It handles mounted or unmounted 35 mm transparencies, snapshots, B&W. It does it all at least for my needs. It includes carriers for different formats. And it is quiet. The price was nice compared to my other film scanner who decided to concentrate in another field. No firmware/software updates. symmetron Posted April 30, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted April 30, 2010 Regarding the LS-IV and Vuescan AND Nikon Scan, are there any recommended settings regarding sharpening, etc. that I should use? Most of my scan will be K64 and E-6 slides.

Funny that you asked ... I too have the Nikon LS-IV and also the Plustek 7600 - I just ran some test scans using the two scanned with the Nikon scanning software as well as the Silverfast I can't say that the Plustek is sign better (still learning though) - THe Nikon has 2900 max DPI the Plustek is higher rated - the ultimate resolution and detail aren't all that much different You can download some scanned files at Michael Sossenheimer | Scanner Test and compare - I hope that that will help. I love the Plustek as it is small, comes in a neat bag and uses very little foot print space...
