Rocky Nook recently released Mastering Photoshop Layers by Juergen Gulbins. I have read about a dozen books on Photoshop and Lightroom, including one on layers. My favorite is Martin Evenings' Photoshop for Photographers (or something like that).

I am just starting Chapter 3 of Gulbins books, but this is a book that I will most likely read several times this winter if Gulbins maintains the excellence throughout.

A beginner would get a lot out of this book, but it really is aimed at someone who is already familiar with Photoshop, including layers. The book covers the basics, but what makes it so good is that it takes it all to the next level, showing you how to use some of the less obvious tools to obtain great results. Gulbins takes a practical approach. In Chapter 2, which covers adjustment layers, he shows how to use layers to eliminate color casts, find dust spots in shadows, mid tones, and highlights, color correct skin tones, and achieve split toning. He often discusses alternative approaches and explains why one may be better than others.

I am looking forward to working my way through the remainder of what looks to be a very useful gem.
