D-Lux 2 manual options

Steve--

I seldom use the camera on manual.

I do use manual exposure in situations where the meter would likely be fooled. It can be quicker to set it manually than to enter the menu system, reset the meter pattern, and then check the result to see if the change was helpful or adequate.

I've never found manual focus controllable. I'm always overshooting the sharp focus point, though that may just be due to slow reflexes. (The manual focus by means of focus ring on the Digilux 2 works very comfortably, but this 'focus-by-wire' system frustrates me.)

Sean Reid's comments on the camera made me aware of its very useful depth-of-field indication (I had always wondered what that yellow stripe was on the right side of the screen), but so far I haven't used the camera with pre-set distance.

In addition, there was a comment on this forum--accurate or not, I don't know--that one cannot set the camera to infinity except as I recall with the 'astronomy' or 'night sky' mode.

Hope that helps.

Yep, all the time. Well not all the time because I don't use the camera all the time but as the occasion demands. The in focus zone or depth of of field indicator you have found. So MF or pre focus when you cant afford AF lag, manual exposure or when you want exposure control outside metered "correct"

Oh, and I should have said: Manual or Auto, the camera is wonderful. I see Rob shoots the full frame as I do. Same holds for everyone I know who has the D-Lux 2. I don't know why, but that 16:9 just feels 'right' for many subjects. I seldom use the camera on either other aspect ratio.

I use manual focus when I know something is going to happen in a certain zone before it happens, I tend to do this for shooting my children. Manual exposure as well when light is not changing much but subject matter colour may be.

i never use the auto focus but i do often use full manual mode. i seem to get more of what im trying to get by overriding the auto aperture/speed. something about the metering that seems to be great until that "decisive moment" in which it fails miserably (or i fail to use it properly of course). interesting to read all the converts to the 16:9 format as well. i used it exclusively for a while after i got the dlux2 but found i was always cropping down to 3:2. i like the look of that "leica" format that im so used to. now its always set to 3:2 and i generally only use it for black and white as i was never to impressed with the color performance (color rendition, chromanance noise etc.). fun little pocket cam tho for those days when i dont feel like dragging the m6 along.
