Default Leitz Self-Timer APDOO/OTZNO

Can anyone help?

First Question:

I have the Leitz APDOO/OTZNO Self-Timer.
Does anyone know where I can get this item repaired?
The shutter release mechanism will not trigger and the movement of the self-timer is laboured.
I actually got it apart, and then I stared at it for a while, hoping for the epiphany, which never arrived; then I put it back together.

Second Question:
Can anyone suggest and alternative self-timing device for my MP?

Cheers,

Roelof

Hello Roelof,

It may not be very economical to have the selftimer repaired. Depending on how handy you are, you can try flushing the clockwork with lighter fluid; if, as you say, the selftimer movement is 'laboured', the clockwork probably needs cleaning.

I have not been inside one of these so cannot offer any other hints - sorry.

Otherwise, a simple search on eBay came up with this:

Hansa Selftimer.............................MINT/Box - eBay (item 270371617712 end time Jul-07-09 21:49:10 PDT)

Any standard selftimer will fit the MP, it has a universal shutter release thread.

Best,

Jan

...Roelof, have you successfully used this particular device in the past? If so, are you attempting to use it with a camera it was calibrated for?

Good point, I forgot to mention that - the APDOO has the cupped fitting for screwmount Leica shutter releases. The OTZNO will convert it to the standard M release. I don't have an APDOO in the office so, can't check it but, does it not have an adjustment that sets up the length of the plunger's travel?

However, I think the OP has a problem with the APDOO's not working period - once that is fixed, adjustment may be attempted.

Best,

Jan

...yes, the length of the APDOO plunger can be adjusted from the underside of the device. Note that if the length of the plunger has been adjusted to fire the shutter of camera X, it will not necessarily fire the shutter of camera Y at the same setting.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I checked out the Hansa self-timer on e-bay, but I am a little gun-shy about a used item, as I got burned on this one.
My fault: buyer beware.
Does anyone know if there is a new one commercially available?
Cheers,

roelof

Once again, thanks for all of the sound advice.
The self-timer fits onto my MP perfectly, but it just doesn't "fire", if that's the proper term.
I suppose I'm dreaming to think Leica will ever make a new self-timer for those of us stuck in the manual/film camera time warp.
Anyway.

Cheers,

roelof

...Roelof, do not be so hasty in abandoning the device - it needs to be calibrated for your specific camera before it will successfully fire the shutter.

This topic is not new to the forum and has been dealt with extensively in the past - for further details click here.

Go through the entire thread and let us know how you get on.

Thanks again,
What I didn't spell out clearly in my first post is that the device itself doesn't seem to fire when off of the camera.
When the timer winds down, it just sort of stalls at the end of the cycle, and I don't hear any audible noise to indicate that the device has triggered.
I presume I should hear something?

Hello Roelof,

When the device is not mounted on the camera, it has nothing to trigger. When you wind it and release it, all that is happening is that the timer runs through its cycle and gradually extends its release plunger.

Once you mount the device on the camera, you should be able to adjust the depth of the plunger to match the MP. I am not sure exactly which selftimer you have but, most work and adjust the same way.

Best,

Jan
