All,

I had the pleasure of attending a function featuring Sebastiao Salgado last night in San Francisco. He debuted his new work, "Genesis", which was nothing less than spectacular. What an eye this gentleman has.

During his discussion he talked about how he switched to medium format (Pentax) and to some high end Canon SLR gear for his latest shoots. This after more than 30 years of Leica usage. Humorously he drew a gasp when he said he is using digital at this point (still does wet prints).

It made me smile when he said he will most likely switch back to Leica when the S2 is introduced... it will certainly be nice to have such a talent back in the family.

Anyway, it was a great night and he was certainly a gentleman as I got to say "hello" during a pre-event reception. He was very patient and made it a special time for all involved.

Here is a quick shot of him last night in a VERY dim room. M8 + Noct. ISO 1250, F1.2 or so. Yes, very grainy (I don't have time today to work on it).

It's good news for Leica, but it doesn't surprise me. Salgado uses Pentax 645 film cameras, then digital cameras... that brings him to the Leica S2.

I think it will be a great camera, and a great sales success for Leica.

Bummer, I missed this. I should pay more attention to what's going on. I'm in SF too and have been looking forward to Genesis. I believe this project was seven or eight years in the making. Thanks for the news and the wonderful portrait of this great photographer.

What was he like?

Eman
