dibyendumajumdar Posted March 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted March 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I bought a used Leica R-E last week. The camera seems to be working fine, but I notice that the lining inside the mirror box has cracks - this is true for the lining on the walls, as well as under the mirror. Is this normal? Will this start crumbling? Regards Dibyendu
Advertisement Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Hi dibyendumajumdar, Take a look here Leica R-E cracks in mirror box lining. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ijporter Posted March 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted March 11, 2009 If you are referring to the soft sponge-like lining, I regret to say that - yes - it will continue to disintegrate. I have a R6 and had the same problem. I had the camera serviced by an official Leica Service centre and had it replaced. I suggest that you do the same. I didn't want bits of black foam getting into places it shouldn't! Ian
dibyendumajumdar Posted March 11, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted March 11, 2009 Hi, Thanks for the reply. I had the camera checked by RGLewis (London) - they said not to worry; this is quite common, and they have seen far worse. But I am surprised that there is so little discussion of it if it is common thing. This is my first Leica - I own several Nikon's and none of them have any lining on the mirror-box walls. ijporter Posted March 11, 2009 Share #4 Posted March 11, 2009 Sorry, it seems that I misunderstood your question. I read 'lining' to mean the foam rubber seals lining the box. If it is the material covering the mirror box walls, then - as you've been advised - it is purely cosmetic and of no real significance. Mine had gone a light grey colour and I feared this might reduce the contrast and colour saturation of the light reaching the film, so I darkened it with a black permanent marker. When I had the camera serviced, they replaced the mirror box and it is now as black as it was originally. Ian
adan Posted March 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted March 12, 2009 Hasselblad added a new anti-reflection material (I forget their trade name for it) to bodies sometime in the past 20 years or so - now that material is also commonly shrinking and cracking. I don't think the cracks have much practical effect, but they sure play hob with resale value and "comfort"!
dibyendumajumdar Posted March 15, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted March 15, 2009 Hi, I have posted some pictures to show the cracks in the lining. I would be interested to know how many of you have similar cracks in your Leica R cameras.
