Adjusting the M camera shutter release button

I used my M3 yesterday and realised how much nicer it is than my M6 when it comes to releasing the shutter. On my M6 the release needs to travel to its extremity in the socket before the shutter fires and I am sure it leads to occasional camera shake. I wonder if I could get it adjusted sometime? I don't want to be without for months.

Has anyone else experienced this condition?

Agree with you, but I doubt if its fixable. The shutter release in any of the (recent) metered bodies needs to have a first and second stop for activating the meter and firing. IIRC, the M5, where the meter is always active once the shutter is cocked doesn't have this "feature".

Have you tried one of Tom's softies? I think they improve the handling.

Yes, the reason is the extra step that the M6/7 has to take in order to get 'ready, as Tim mentioned.

The M5 however, does have one of the longest release travels of all M's. It is correct that the meter is always on when the camera is cocked. But - the release movement has to fold the meter arm out of the film path - this is of course done via a mechanical linkage and does mirginally increase the shutter release effort. To M5's credit, the increase is marginal and only an experienced M user would notice it, just like on the other metered M's.

david.. ya - as mentioned - the m cameras with light meter build - that includes my MP camera, has different shutter release feeling than the m3 becasue it has a longer travel because of the half press to activate the light metter. in my opinion - there is also a differance that the shutter release itself is smoother and more reactive...

after i got my mp i talked to leica technicals in germany, and asked about the possibility to make it smooth like on m3. they told me impossible (even if i would give up with the light metter)...

the m3 shutter release is amazing of course.. u just have to "want to press it" and it is already pressed, which is great with slow shutter speeds... but actually it works very well with mp too (and m6 for that matter) if u de-press the shutter premerly to photo taking. then it works equaly good as mp , but without tat megical smoothness of m3.

Tim, Victor and Jan, thank you.

It is interesting that your opinion highlights the delights of the M3. I do wish the M6 was similar. I must investigate the soft release option. Where can you buy it?

This whole thread just confirms why I still use an M3 and haven't really been tempted to get a more "modern" M-type camera. The M3 really is superb. Having said that, the M8 is a different breed of cat.

David,

The 'Softie' is manufactured by Tom Abrahamsson in Vancouver, along with other items as the Rapidwinder and other goodies. Here is the link: Rapidwinder & Rapidgrip

I used to own Tom's Rapidwinder - it is superbly made and works like charm. I sold it however, as I found that it increased the M's size unnecessarilly. Personally, I do not like the 'Softie'. The M's shutter release (any M...) is fabulous as it is. The cup around the release can be used to support one's finger during exposure, to minimize camera shake. For my hands, the Softie gave me less support for the release finger, than the unmodified shutter release. But I have fairly skinny hands, maybe for larger hands the Softie would work differently.

All the best,

Jan

The shutter release is adjustable on the M6, just like the M3. It is a simple adjustment to change the point the shutter releases at and will take a tech about five minutes to do it.

I have all my M's (M3, M6TTL) adjusted to fire at about the same point. I haven't bothered to see if it can be done on my M7.

Here is an archive of a LUG post describing the adjustment.
