Which Tripod?

I don't know :)

I have Manfortto 055 nature with 029 head and it is beast I use for Mamiya RB and it can be used for 8x10 large format camera. It is for driving in car to the place and not for carrying around. Then I have Slik 500 pro, which is for my SLR cameras, and it is for carrying around. It can be used for M6, and even thaht tripodcan be too much for M6. As M6 is RF camera, even some cheaper tripod like one you can buy for video cameras would be enough except in windy situation.

My Manfrotto is higher than I am (I am 1,86 meters tall), with extension column about or even more than 2 meters (including head which is itself 15 to 20 centimeters tall), Slik is about my height with extension column, but you can buy as many additional extension columns as you want :).

Manfrotto I have is about 4 kg weight (or even more I dont know for sure), Slik is about 2,5 kg, so think about that too.

As I remember (I bought it secondhand, and I am telling price for new when I looked new prices - if it is on sale, it is old tripod) Manfrotto 055 (not nature, but regular, smaller version) was about 150 Euros and 029 (let say that is standard head) head was also about 150 Euros, that is about 300 Euros total. My Slik costed me with head, new in shop, about 100 Euros.

If you buy Manfrotto, Bogen, Gitzo and simillar, differencies between same class (simillar priced) tripods are so small that you can buy whatever of those and won't make mistake.

Check web sites of manufacturers for current production models.

Nor do I.. ;) I have a biggish Hama one, and although its got a water-level thats completely unusable because there is no 90° click-stop above the level at the camera mount. With this I just want to direct your attention to not buying a tripod that offers no units/raster for reproducable angles.

I can highly recommend the Benro tripods. They are cheap and have a good built quality.

You can get them here. Good shop.

If you want ultra portability i can recommend the travel-angel tripods.

Second-hand carbon fibre Gitzo Traveller or Mountaineer.
I strongly second this recommendation as I went this route myself. I bought a (very) used Gitzo G-1228 and took the whole thing apart and replaced the sheaths and lubed where required. It still looked used but worked like new. Stay away from Gitzo ballheads and get a Kirk, Markins or Linhof. You can buy the ballhead new and still be under your budget. This rig is a bit of overkill for a Leica M but overkill is good when it comes to camera support. Recently I bought a 617 panoramic camera and I'm really glad I have this tripod.

I'm in agreement with this. I've got a Gitzo G2227 and it's a great tripod. It's not small but if it will carry anything larger than an M it needs to be solid.

The other great tripod is the Leica tabletop tripod with the large ball head. An amazing tripod for its size. When I can't be bothered with the Gitzo I take that one along.

Regards

Mike

Mine's a G1028, with a battered old Leitz large ball head which it shares with an even older Leitz table tripod (as Mike says, an excellent device).

Gitzo travellers are great, the legs fold back 180 degrees making them extremely compact (as well as lightweight).

Mine folds to A4 length, I can stash it under the flap of the Hadley Pro bag. I've used it with the M7/M8 and occasionally a Hasselblad or Plaubel Makina 67. I've had no problems with stability although I haven't really used it in high winds.

I kept the Gitzo ball head, works fine for me although I'd probably swap it for one with a compact quick release if I came across one.

Incidentally - there are copycat Gitzo carbon fibre tripods here in China that also have the 180 degree foldback on the legs. They are way cheaper - but I haven't bought one as I already have the Gitzo. I think the brandname is Benro, they looked ok when I played with one in the shop.

David.
