leicamann Posted August 5, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, I just purchased a new focising screen for the R8, the intructions are easy to follow, but this "new focusing screen" not only does it not focus but also produces ghastly shadows on the corners..not so present on the telephoto lenses. I rehearsed putting it in and out of the special "holder".... and when re- installing the old"split screen" focusing screen..no problems. I noticed you can only put it in one way and its clicked properly into place...soooooooooooooo..whats wrong? Your guidance and help on this would be most appreciated. Regards, Leicamann:confused:
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2006 Posted August 5, 2006 Hi leicamann, Take a look here R8..new focusing screen issues..doesn't focus, shadows in corners?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ruiespanhol Posted August 5, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2006 What kind of type of focusing screen you buy? If was the clear screen is only for scientific, photomicroscopy and not suitable for general outdoor or indoor photography. If was other type please check if was well inserted in the frame holder. Remenber some lenses produces more dark points in the focusing screen then others this ocuurs if yoy are using one telephoto lenses whit the microprism focusing screen. For using the telephoto lenses the better focusing screen is the ground glass focusing screen. Regards,
rick_dykstra Posted August 5, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2006 The focussing screens do exhibit shading in some corners and sides with slower lenses, in my experience. Particularly with the f5.6 lenses or teleconverters - very noticeable shading. The split screen on a Universal Foccussing Screen will also black out with these slower lenses. A feature of the system. Nevertheless I think you'll find the R8/9 viewfinder system to be great to use - optimised for manual focussing as it is. Try the Uniform Ground Glass focussing screen. It doesn't have distracting focussing aids and allows for free composition. In combination with your eyes and brain it has a million focussing sensors. Hi Rui! Hope you are well. I was cheering for Portugal in the World Cup - just not when when they were playing Holland.

11275 Posted August 6, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 6, 2006 Leicamann: The Leica numbers for full frame 35mm film focusing screens are: 14343 - Universal Screen, usually comes with the camera, has center microprism with split-image. 14345 - Microprism Screen, center is all microprism - no spilt-image 14347 - Clear Screen with Crosslines, usable only for extreme macro, center metering zone is marked. 14344 - Uniform Ground Glass, all smooth ground glass with only a center metering point marked. 14346 - Uniform Ground Glass with Grid Divisions and TV Marks, as above with the addition of many crosslines and hash marks for television aspect ratio. Remember that the Digital Back requires additional, smaller frame lines etched on the screen to define the smaller sensor size - thus they are different and carry different catalog numbers. They do not have to be removed for film use, one can just ignore the additional frame lines for full frame 35mm. If you are every to consider the use of the DMR you could install one of those specific screens now and be prepared for later.
leicamann Posted August 6, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted August 6, 2006 You just answered my question 14347 - Clear Screen with Crosslines, usable only for extreme macro, center metering ....so it obviously can't be used in any other circumstance..I'll keep it anyhow, because I do alot of Macro work, probably very usefull. Thank you all again. Regards, Leicamann:)
leicapages Posted August 6, 2006 Share #7 Posted August 6, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) The "best" focusing screen for general purpose is Leica Nr 14387 - universal with gridlines. All the usual focusing aids plus very useful gridlines according to the 2/3rd rule. I am using it for a year now. See an image here: Foto Hobby Rahn - Leica Universal Screen with grid division NEW!! leicapages Posted August 6, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 6, 2006 forgot to mention that this screen is the latest one available for R8/R9 (apart from the DMR ones); hurry up to get one if you want it since it was a limited production run (or so I was told). leicamann Posted August 6, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted August 6, 2006 Thanks Pascal.. looks like 14344 is widely available, while the one you recommend seems to be rarer and harder to find. Any suggestions? So for now I think I will order. 14344. Best, Leicamann

Just to say that I've now got a 14387 screen (recently ordered from Solms via MK). It now replaces the old gridline screen which was on my R8 with 28/2.8 PC for architectural work. I now get the best of all worlds, gridlines, microprism donut and split image rangefinder. The gridlines are nice and thick, and I like this screen a lot. It is on the official Leica website as an available screen, and they obviously still do have them!
garyp Posted August 31, 2006 Share #12 Posted August 31, 2006 I'll jump in with a vote for the uniform GG; no distractions hardly at all. Sometimes,I even wish the metering outline wasn't there
rick_dykstra Posted September 2, 2006 Share #13 Posted September 2, 2006 Hy Rick I fell well Thanks so much for your suport of the Portuguese team on the World Cup but why you not suport the Portuguese team when play whit Holland? Regards, Rui Hi Rui. Well, my support for Holland over Portugal is down to me hearing a lot of Dutch at home when I was growing up and being told while learning soccer to "just play like Cruijff!" My surname is also something of a clue. But before Holland and after, I was all for Portugal. Great team - great players. Maybe next time. Nah - Australia will win that one!
