ibogost Posted March 22, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, I lost my shutter soft release. Again. I got my last one from Luigi but I don't feel like paying the int'l freight for just that item. Any suggestions on locations to get one (or several) cheap, stateside? I use the convex style release and those seem harder to find. Also, any suggestions on how to avoid losing them? There's just not much turn in that shutter before it drops. george + Posted March 22, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 22, 2007 Tom's are great, and not very expensive - I ordered several. But they do get lost too. How about some, ugh, Locktite? Just a little touch of it?
imported_peter_m Posted March 22, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 22, 2007 Nail polish works good and is less permanent then some types of locktite Peter
ibogost Posted March 23, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted March 23, 2007 Nail polish works good and is less permanent then some types of locktite Peter Yeah, it is a concern. Spending $15 every couple months is better than permasofting my shutter. Easy and harmless to undo with nail polish?
robsteve Posted March 23, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I forgot I had a couple soft releases until I read your post. I tried one on the M8 and it works great.
ibogost Posted March 23, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted March 23, 2007 I forgot I had a couple soft releases until I read your post. I tried one on the M8 and it works great. Yeah, they really make a difference. I think I can get a consistent half- to full-stop out of handheld shooting with it.
R.Morrison Posted March 23, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 23, 2007 I'm using one of Tom Abrahamsson's SOFTIES on my M4-P. It makes a noticeable improvement. I used nail polish per Tom's suggestion. It retards but does not prevent the SOFTIE'S backing off in the release button's threads. Yours, Robert Morrison, M4-P, etc.
imported_peter_m Posted March 23, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 23, 2007 Yeah, it is a concern. Spending $15 every couple months is better than permasofting my shutter. Easy and harmless to undo with nail polish? I never used nail polish on a soft release but been using it for ages on Chicago screws. They are easy to undo but it sticks just enough to keep them from getting loose. The other option is get some of the locktite designed for aluminum or gunsmith locktite. But as R.Morrison mentioned all of the above can get loose on there own. But stick better then without.Just don't use to much just a bit on the thread of the softie will do. tobey bilek Posted March 23, 2007 Share #12 Posted March 23, 2007 Blue, not red, Loctite. Use the absolute smallest dab you can apply with the sharp point of a pin. It will break loose with force. I have used it on bottle cork pullers where the small screws were always coming loose. Same with eyeglasses. Red will never come loose.
