Peter Branch Posted April 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have just noticed in the January price list issued by Leica Store Mayfair, UK that the 24mm Elmarit is listed as "Limited Stock", the only M lens with such a comment Have I missed something or is it possible that this excellent lens is no longer being produced? Advertisement Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 Hi Peter Branch, Take a look here 24mm f2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH, 11878. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
freusen Posted April 20, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 20, 2011 Old news, the production of the f2.8/24mm Elmarit-M ASPH is discontinued. It is really terrible to see how Leica are destroying their wide angle lineup of lenses. The Elmarit line is gone now, replaced by "sunshine" Elmar lenses (f:3.8) and monstrous Summiluxes with dubious image quality, especially in 24mm. The 2.8 speed made the Elmarit 24mm and 21mm useful for quite a lot of indoor work, especially with digital cameras. Elmar lenses are for outdoor work, or flash. There's a place for them, but the gap in weight, bulk, (un)handiness, IQ and, yes, price is absurd. 21mm and 24mm Summicron lenses would have been welcome, and would have paired well with the Elmar lenses, but now we will not see them – Leica can't afford to offer three different speeds in outlying focal lengths. Sensible, everyday photography has been sacrificed for bragging rights. Leica should concentrate on keeping available – meaning, delivery within a week or two of the order – a range of sensible everyday lenses, instead of brandishing exotic special optics while even mid-speed, mid-focal lenght lenses are nearly impossible to find. A Leica is a camera to make photographs with – not a piece of luxury bling. _____________ FrankR
Posto 6 Posted April 20, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 20, 2011 It is exactly "bragging rights" which are a major driver of Leica sales to the newly emerging rich in the East and also in Russia.
Griswold Posted April 21, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 21, 2011 I think Lars is correct. When you look at the crazy gap in the 24mm lineup the 2.8 will probably become another sought after Leica lens. I was going to wait to get one, but decided to do it sooner. The f stop gap is too big... no reasonable explanation for it other than the one Lars put forth which sadly is very believable.
Posto 6 Posted April 21, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 21, 2011 I also agree, and got mine 2 years ago. It really is a wonderful lens in all senses. The chrome one is exquisite if you do not mind the (small) extra weight
