leicanut2 Posted September 4, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 4, 2010 I have bin looking at that and the Zeiss monocular. leica has the close up lens and is water proof to 16ft. Zeiss is a 10 power but not water proof and no close up lens. So anyone out have the Leica monovid? Give us a mini review. Jan
giordano Posted September 4, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 4, 2010 A while back I needed an ultra-light viewing aid and looked at the little monoculars as well as binoculars. Two eyes are definitely better than one, and I ended up buying the little 6x20B Zeiss binocular. That was in 1974 and I'm still using it, never regretted paying the extra. I'm certain that a monocular would have been no more than a neat gadget spending its life in the desk drawer, while the little binocular is a really practical device but still small and light enough to take everywhere. 40mm f/2 Posted September 4, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 4, 2010 I have a Vixen Multi Monocular 4X12 which I use more as a loupe than for distance. I was looking for something with better optical quality and tried the Monovid in a store but was not convinced: The Vixen allows to focus continuously from infinity to 20 cm but with the Monovid you need an extra lens; easy to loose and a big gap in focus. Monoculars are much more difficult to hold still compared to binoculars (more so for distance). So 8x or 10x are to much. I think 6x would be the limit. Also the field is pretty narrow but the quality is better than the Zeiss monos I saw.
lars_bergquist Posted September 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 5, 2010 The glasses I carry most everywhere is a pair of Leica Ultravid 8x20. They are superb and fit in any jacket pocket, except possibly those of a tuxedo. The old man with two pretty good eyes

The old man with two pretty good eyes Just like to 100% agree - I use my Ultravid 8x20 BR everywhere e.g. at see and in the opera house and they are really excellent, do not need anyone else although this one is not specifically designed for sailing. But of course - mine has been once at Solms for humidity leakage..... /Anders
