thomasmartinledford Posted January 16, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) The frame counter on my Leica M7 will not reset properly. Instead of returning to -3 upon loading a new canister, the counter returns to "8". Is there anything I can do to try and fix this problem short of returning to Leica USA for repair? Thank you. Advertisement Posted January 16, 2007 Posted January 16, 2007 Hi thomasmartinledford, Take a look here Leica M7 Frame Counter. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wizard Posted January 16, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 16, 2007 Martin, the frame counter should return to -2, not -3. Yours is definitely off though. Try to manipulate the frame counter's reset sprocket (accessible after removing the bottom plate of the camera) at the bottom of the camera a bit to see if the frame counter then moves to -2. If that doesn't help, it needs repair. Good luck, Andy
droim Posted January 17, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 17, 2007 I had this happen once with an M6 and it had to go back for repair. If it is still under warranty it will be covered, but may take some time. If it is not still under warranty since you are in Burbank, I would highly recommend Steve's Camera in Culver City. He's great and very quick. Good luck, Rodney
lstaerck Posted January 18, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2007 I had that on my M6, the CS repaired it for about 300 Euros including some useless cleaning and adjustment of the rangefinder (the camera has been serviced recently).
thomasmartinledford Posted January 18, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted January 18, 2007 Thanks, guys, for the advice and tips. I've only run about 50 rolls of film through the M7. It's still under warranty but I'm afraid to send it back to Leica USA at the moment. I've left three voice mails and one email for Brenda as well as the repair department for assistance in this matter, but no one has yet to respond to my requests. Perhaps they are overwhelmed from the M8 debacle. I certainly can't afford to be without my M7 for months. Andy -- you mentioned a reset at the bottom of the camera. I tried to locate it but was unsuccessful. Any direction you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks again for the help and suggestions. wizard Posted January 19, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 19, 2007 Martin, I'll try to post a photo to show the reset. That'll be Monday though. Andy

lstaerck Posted January 19, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 19, 2007 Andy -- you mentioned a reset at the bottom of the camera. I tried to locate it but was unsuccessful. Any direction you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Have a look at the removable bottom cover. If you already used the camera there are some scratches in the black paint. This is where the reset touches the bottom cover. But this won't help... .
wizard Posted January 22, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 22, 2007 Ok, here I am, as promised. The two shots show the lower end of the frame counter reset lever as it protrudes from the bottom of the camera once the baseplate is removed. This lever is spring-loaded and will get pushed inwards a bit once the baseplate is attached and locked. Conversely, if the baseplate is taken off, the spring load acting on the lever urges the lever out of the camera a bit, thus releasing the frame counter, which should then spring back to its -2 positon. Try to move this lever up and down a bit, in case it doesn't free the frame counter entirely as it should. If that doesn't help, the camera will need to go to a qualified service(wo)man, who will have to take the top off and see what's wrong. Good luck, Andy Welcome, dear visitor! thomasmartinledford Posted January 22, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted January 22, 2007 Thanks so much, Andy, for posting the photos. I tried pushing in the lever, but nothing happened. So off to Leica for repair. I really appreciate everyone's help. Martin
wizard Posted January 22, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 22, 2007 I tried pushing in the lever, but nothing happened. Martin, pushing in won't help. You should try to pull the lever further out, if possible, as that is the direction for releasing the frame counter. Andy
thomasmartinledford Posted January 22, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted January 22, 2007 Hey Andy -- Thanks for the follow-up. Tried that and nothing happened as well. Martin
