dpattinson Posted May 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted May 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was attempting to use my SF58 flash off-camera and noticed that the slave mode will only work on the first occasion after the flash is powered on. Subsequent flashes from the on-camera unit have no effect, until the SF58 is powered off/on and then again it will fire once only. Has anyone else observed this behavior? I'm fairly sure I have it correctly set up, and it refuses to fire even when the triggering flash is fired directly at the sensor.

dpattinson Posted June 1, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted June 1, 2010 Well, it seems I'd confused the slave cell (left shoulder of the flash) with the 'auto-mode' cell (front of flash). The reason it wasn't working is that the sensor was on the opposite side of the flash unit to the triggering flash. Pity there isn't a slave cell on both shoulders of the flash, as it makes placement of the flash to the left of camera a little difficult. Why it was consistently working fine for the first shot after being powered on, I have no idea. I guess for some reason it must be somewhat more sensitive for the first firing. Handy to know just in case.
EJohnE Posted June 6, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 6, 2010 Would a small mirror/reflector at 45 degrees near the flash work? My stone-age hammerhead flash doesn't need to have its slave cell pointing anywhere near the master flash. Such is progress. John.
