disconnekt Posted December 12, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a CL with Summicron-C 40/2 and am frustrated by the inability to focus closer than about a meter. I know very little about M lenses except that they are generally very expensive—does anyone have a recommendation for me for an M lens that is affordable and can focus closer? Ideally I'd like it to be between 35 and 80mm. Thank you!
Advertisement Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Hi disconnekt, Take a look here which lens focuses closer than my Summicron-C 40/2?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
giordano Posted December 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 12, 2009 There's nothing that will focus much closer. According to Leica literature from the period the 40mm Summicron focuses (with rangefinder coupling) to 0.8m. Most 35mm and 50mm lenses from the last few decades will focus to 0.7m, but that's not much of a gain (and I don't whether the CL rangefinder will work closer than 0.8m). If you want the smallest field of view rather than closer focusing as such, then use a 90mm lens such as the Elmar-C 90mm f/4. Even though they only focus to 1.0m you get a much smaller field of view than with the 40mm lens at 0.8m. Don't be tempted by the 90mm Macro-Elmar M: the close-focusing gadget for this won't work with the CL.
disconnekt Posted December 12, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted December 12, 2009 John, thanks so much for these precisions, I really appreciate it. I'm sorry to learn I can't have a lens that will focus closer, so I will look into the 90mm lens instead.
