I have a CL with Summicron-C 40/2 and am frustrated by the inability to focus closer than about a meter. I know very little about M lenses except that they are generally very expensive—does anyone have a recommendation for me for an M lens that is affordable and can focus closer? Ideally I'd like it to be between 35 and 80mm. Thank you!

There's nothing that will focus much closer. According to Leica literature from the period the 40mm Summicron focuses (with rangefinder coupling) to 0.8m.

Most 35mm and 50mm lenses from the last few decades will focus to 0.7m, but that's not much of a gain (and I don't whether the CL rangefinder will work closer than 0.8m).

If you want the smallest field of view rather than closer focusing as such, then use a 90mm lens such as the Elmar-C 90mm f/4. Even though they only focus to 1.0m you get a much smaller field of view than with the 40mm lens at 0.8m.

Don't be tempted by the 90mm Macro-Elmar M: the close-focusing gadget for this won't work with the CL.
