alanwong3 Posted July 6, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 6, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, can anyone tell me if Leica UV filters are mono or multi coated. Many said they are only mono coated. Do it mean it will flare more easily? Thanks. Alan
Advertisement Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Hi alanwong3, Take a look here Leica UV filters are mono or multi coated. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
leicapages Posted July 6, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 6, 2006 I asked this question to the customer service in Solms years ago and was assured they were multicoated. Pascal http://www.leicapages.com
wizard Posted July 7, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 7, 2006 If you compare the coatings of Leica filters and B+W MRC filters or Heliopan SHPMC filters, you will notice that the latter two coatings seem to be more effective, judging by the significantly lower intensity of reflexes visible on the glass surface of the filter. Thus, if Leica filters are indeed multicoated, then the other two brands are more multicoated it seems. My guess, however, is that Leica filters are not multicoated. grober Posted July 7, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 7, 2006 Surely the vintage of the Leica filter is important. I suspect the older filters -- of which I still use several -- are only single coated. The current ones must be multi-coated. I haven't noticed any unwanted reflections in my images from using these older filters (mostly 39mm). Of course, capturing unwanted reflections is highly dependent on the particular scene captured, time of day, direction of main light source and presence of unwanted light sources. Another related question is: does Leica make any of their own filters anymore? I don't know. Anyone?
wizard Posted July 7, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 7, 2006 What I do know is that Leica does NOT produce their own filters. Alas, it is not quite clear who actually makes them. Rumours have it that B+W make them according to Leica specs. In any case, both the filter mounting and the coating of B+W's own filters are visibly different, so there is still room for speculation. Daniel kk Posted July 7, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 7, 2006 Andy, I agree with you that Leica does not make filters but making order from other OEM filter producers for the reason of cost and price. It seems no difference to use multi-coated filters from B+W, Hoya, Schneider......etc., I think. Daniel kk:p
robert_parker Posted July 7, 2006 Share #7 Posted July 7, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was told once that the glass is a similar spec to the glass of the Leica lens but I don't know that for sure, it's only what I heard - I suspect that Leica filters are not coated quite as much as some other manufacturer's filters and some certainly do appear to flare more. gberger Posted July 8, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 8, 2006 Another vote for the B+W MRC line of filters. Cheaper than the Leica ones, can be obtained easily by mail, and the ring doesn't bind on the lens. George (The Old Fud)
masjah Posted July 8, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 8, 2006 I too now use B+W MRC (though I started off using the Leica ones when I didn't know better. One thing in favour of the Leica filters is that they have a sprung compliant mounting bearing the onto the ring (presumably to ensure perfect flatness at all temperatures. hm1912 Posted July 8, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 8, 2006 I use B+W and Rodenstock (which I believe don't sell their camera filters in the UK).
atournas Posted July 8, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 8, 2006 Why am I under the impression that new Leica filters are actually B+W MRC filters with the brand name changed (and so done with the price)? Paul

A Leica lens may be comprised of several different kinds of glasses so how are we to understand your statement? Tim:confused:
