Robinandcamera Posted November 1, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 1, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi I'm a bit of a newbie having only had my M8 a short while. I switched from a 5d mkII with a 50mm 1.4 and 28mm 1.8. Since making the switch I've been missing the shallow dof I used to be able to achieve with the full frame and fast primes I had, also the ISO performance is no where near that of the 5d so I'm looking for some faster lenses and also to get a 50mm as it was my most used lens. Due to limited budget, I'm thinking of trading in the Elmarit and picking up the two CV lenses. Unfortunately Leica glass is going to be out of the question at present. I'm interested in opinions on the lenses I'm looking at, in particularly the 28mm CV as I'm a little concerned I might be disappointed. How does a lens such as this compare to say canon slr primes? The 28mm often gets compared to the summicron and obviously comes out worse, should I be worried about this? The fact that it even gets compared makes me think it must still be pretty good lens, and that it is just because it is in competition with such great lenses that it doesn't perhaps get the best write ups or does it have fundamental flaws? Comments on both lenses appreciated. Many thanks PS A few photos from the m8 I took today by the way, I had to really think about my shots to get the dof I was after with only 2.8 and the smaller sensor:
Advertisement Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Hi Robinandcamera, Take a look here Opinions please. 28mm Elmarit --> CV28mm f2 and CV 40mm 1.4?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jiukuic5609 Posted November 2, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2009 I have a m8 and just purchased a 28mm Elmarit, Mk III model, 49mm thread, Canada from KEH. I love it. The OOF areas are great and while not like 50mm for subject isolation it feels right on the m8, and the IQ is really top notch... If you have the new Elmarit, I would trade in for one of the older 28mm Elmarits before going to CV... I would get a CV nokton 50mm because the price differential between the 'Lux 50 leica and the Nokton is much greater the CV 28mm and a Mk III or IV pre-asph Leica 28mm.... Anyways that is my plan for a next lens, the CV Nokton 50mm... I have a review on my site if you want to check it out Leica Elmarit 28mm Review for M8 — Daniel Valente Photography
Robinandcamera Posted November 2, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted November 2, 2009 Thanks Daniel, but I already have the Elmarit and I'm looking at a 40mm, not 50mm as on the M8 a 40mm will give a field of view similar to a 50mm. Does anyone have experience with these lenses (cv 28 f2 and 40mm 1.4)? Great photos by the way Robin

As a matter of interest, which type of 28mm Elmarit do you have? The types III and IV are superb lenses and well worth keeping rather than px'ing. Cheers dunk
Jiukuic5609 Posted November 2, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 2, 2009 Thanks - I have used the CV 28 and while nice it certainly was a step below other 28mm lenses in terms of contrast, build, color and "drawing". One lens you may look at as a high price/performance lens is the Summicron 40mm Leica. There are several posts about using this with samples and it looks really nice. The two bummer things are that it uses strange "series 5.5 fiters" and depending on the framelines you want to bring up, you may have to file of some of the flange. That being said it looks like the typical build quality is characteristically Leica and you can get a good-condition copy for like $400 dollars. It's also a very compact lens. Decisive Momentum: Leica 40mm Summicron-C vs. CV 40mm Nokton This guy compared the two (CV 40 to L 40 Cron). Leitz Summicron-C 40mm f/2.0 on Flickr - Photo Sharing! Incidentally depending on what version Elmarit you have, I may be interested in taking it off your hands ;-)

Incidentally depending on what version Elmarit you have, I may be interested in taking it off your hands ;-) Hi, thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into the Summicron as well and read those links when I get home. What I'm really missing is the shallow dof, plus I'd like a 50mm equivalent lens as well, just so happens that both the cv lenses would mean I wouldn't have to spend any extra cash as the 28mm elmarit would cover the cost. The nokton at 1.4 would help with the DoF perhaps more than the sum. I have the ASPH 6bit encoded Elmarit by the way. Perhaps the best way will be to just trawl flickr and maybe just pick up the CV lens when I am next in the states to give them a go (a lot cheaper there compared to the uk) . Given photography is just a casual hobby for me I can't justfy spending too bigger bucks which is a shame... Does any one know of any other reviews kicking around on the net for these lenses? I've seen steve huffs reviews. Just a little worried about the 28mm Ultron might dissapoint.
Jiukuic5609 Posted November 8, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 8, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) You have the latest lens, eh? That 28mm-ASPH is kinda as good as it gets lens-wise - I think you will be disappointed with the CV - one of the coolest thing about the Leica M lenses is that you don't have to stop them down, i.e. you don't have to trade IQ for wide-open-ness as in other Canon/Nikon well basically any other lenses...so that f/1.4 or 1.9 performance you get on the CV is much less. Have you though about mounting a nikon 35mm f/1.4 ais with a lens mount adaptor? I think you can get one of those for like $600 and I think it has really high IQ. Robinandcamera Posted November 11, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted November 11, 2009 Thanks for the feedback everyone, I've decided to pick up the CV lenses and see how I get on, if I'm not happy then I'll just keep the elmarit. I think trying them is going to be the best way and see if I happy with the quality.
