I recently obtained a Leica 16-21 WATE lens and I am confused with the grey scale on the lens. When the grey setting is set to the 0.5 meter mark, the 0.3 meter grey scale mark doesn't line up with anything. I can't imagin Leica putting a worthless setting on a lens. Can anyone explain this to me. I would appreciate it.

The lens will focus down to 0.5 but will not be coupled to the rangefinder when used at less than 0.7 metres. The markings below 0.5 are used to indicate the depth of field at various focal lengths and f-stops. When focused at 0.5 at 16mm FL and f16 the depth of field will extend down to 0.3 metres. Hence the 0.3 metre mark lines up with f16 at FL 16mm. At f22 the depth of field will extend closer than 0.3 metres.

Thanks for the information. The lens I have, the 0.3/12" grey setting does not line up with anything when I set the focusing mark at 0.5 and the aperature at either f/16 or f/22. From what you are telling me I have a Dud which needs to be returned. Am I correct? Again, thanks for your help.

No, you don't have a Dud :D. When you have the lens set to it's closest focus distance (that's with the rangefinder cam uncoupled) then the 0.5m/2ft scale markings are opposite the central reference line on the barrel - that's how it should be. The extended gray markings out to 12"/0.3m are intended to be used with the white stepped zigzag aperture lines to indicate the depth of field for a chosen aperture and a set focal length. ie. When set to f22 and 20"/0.5m focus the near depth of field at 21mm focal length is about 13", and at 18mm it's about 11" and at 16mm it's where the focus tab is, about 10". I guess I've just repeated what Delander said but in a slightly different way.
