LondonM Posted October 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, reading for years, now moving from Nikon to Leica. My dad has given me a number of lenses and his M6. One of the lenses is a ver 1 or ver 2 Tele-Elmar 4/135 in great shape. Except that the spring that pushes the rangefinder focussing coupling follower has come out. I don't know how this goes back in. Anybody have a pic or instructions ? I can see where the spring has a tab tab goes into a hole in the brass follower, but I don;t know where the other end goes, since it seems the roller is in the way. Advertisement Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Hi LondonM, Take a look here Tele-Elmar 135 spring help. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lars_bergquist Posted October 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2009 I would not undertake that job myself--and I have unscrewed a few bayonets myself. I do not know the situation in London (is that where you live?) but any Leica dealer should be able to give you a tip about a competent mechanic. And if it comes to the worst, there is of course always Leica in Solms, Germany. That lens is worth saving. LondonM Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted October 24, 2009 Thank you Lars. Here are some more details first. In the first picture you can see the spring and the cam follower. In the second you can see the spring inserted into the obvious hole that is goes into. I just cant tell the full path and what it might hook to around the roller wheel. I rebuilt my Dad's 1964 Omega Seamaster, which he also gave to me. SO assume I have the skills to take apart a Leica bayonet. And yes, I can probably find a repair place too. It would not be an expensive repair. It's accessible and no parts are needed, just knowledge !
lars_bergquist Posted October 25, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 25, 2009 I have never realy messed about with focusing cams, only with bayonets and auto aperture mechanisms in SLR lenses. So you have the 'loose pieces in a bag syndrome' and my advice is to let a pro handle it. The old man
jhild Posted October 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 27, 2009 I don´t know wether I´m right or wether this is helpfull for you but I think there is a part missing. Once I had a 135 tele Elmar but have sold it in favour of a 135 Apo Telyt. Looking at the photographs I seem to remember that there was a small rectangular brass plate fixed by 4 screws holding the part on the pictures plus the little spring in place. This arrangement was fixed to the lens body by two screws accessible from outside. If I would see more pictures, especially from the lens itself, I would probably remember better. dkCambridgeshire Posted October 27, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 27, 2009 I just checked Tomosy's Leica Repair handbook but this is a lens he does not include and there is no other similar lens. Cheers dunk

You are correct. That assembly is still in the lens. My guess is somewhere along the way in my parents travels, somebody pulled the focussing follower too hard and pulled it right out of the lens. I suspect I just need to remove the bayonet and reassemble this by hooking the spring right . By unscrewing the actual lens assembly (trivially easy on these lenses), I can probably just no it with a long needle nose pliers.
jhild Posted October 29, 2009 Share #8 Posted October 29, 2009 well, I hope you are successfull now. From own experience I know that working on these older lenses and bodies you could either become a nervous wreck or a very happy man... Good luck. doubice Posted October 30, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 30, 2009 I removed quite a few rear mounts of the 135mm Tele-Elmars when I was having them coded by John Milich. Yes, Tele-Elmars in plural - I sold the first one thinking that I would not use it on the M8 and changed my mind - bought another one. Sold that one because I found one in better shape - all in all, John coded three of those lenses. Removal of the mount is pretty straightforward - loosen the set screws around the base of the lens and the whole mount comes off. There are no adjustable parts there, just screws holding everything together so, not much risk of screwing up (pun intended....). Simply make sure that things go back the way they came out. Once you have the mount off the lens, it should be self-explanatory how the cam fits back in. If you have problms, I can take the mount of my Tele-Elmar, take some photos of it for reference and post it here or, email it to you. Good luck, Jan
LondonM Posted October 30, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted October 30, 2009 Thanks Jan, It all looks easy in turns of disassembly/assembly. Just not sure of the route the spring takes. Seems it has to go under the roller, which seems a bit weird. If you could look at yours and let me know the routing is would be greatly appreciated. BTW, my lens came from 30th and Balsam, where my folks still live. Was just there 3 weeks ago and it was gloriously sunny. Not the Vancouver I remember growing up !
