  1. +1 for @jaapv's suggestion... I ran into the same issue a while back and my interaction with Topaz on the subject is that it is unsupported out of the camera. I did ask at the time to see if they would include the format in a future release. The reply was polite, but non-committal at best. Tommy.
  2. I have an SL2 and a APO-Elmarit-R 1:2.8/180 and made a shot of two objects approximately 15 miles offshore from my position. I found an artifact of some kind in the picture that I can't seem to figure out. I have seen some horizon artifacts using this camera and lens combination (this is my longest lens, and it is not a daily driver, so I have some limited experience with long focal lengths) when shooting over the water at long distances. This one was strange for me as I see the light station on the left with what I expected, but the large cargo vessel to the right has a horizon artifact that starts at the end of the vessel and continues to the right side of the frame. I would have expected the artifact to be across the whole frame. I also recognize that the objects are at different distances, with the light station being closer than the cargo ship, and i may not have had a perfectly accurate infinity focus. Any ideas on what happened in the cropped version of the picture? Is this a sensor interpretation of what was coming into the barrel of the lens, or is this something that should expect in this kind of frame using this lens? Image attached is a C1 processed crop. Thanks in advance for any insight. Tommy.
  3. I just checked my copy of C1 and don't see that profile. @AZN Is it a custom profile that you created? I remember setting up a custom profile once, named it accordingly, and started that profile creation process with "Linear Response", which would render things in my photos a little flatter than normal as a starting point... I don't see that one anymore on my machine, so I must have either deleted it or the later upgrades removed it... Tommy.
  4. I agree about the SL16-35 as I tried that one out before I purchased the 35mm. Here is a link to a wide field shot (cropped, essentially the center of the frame) using the SL2 and the SL35mm, f/2, 15 shot interval, ISO3200, 4sec in much darker skies - Buxton NC - using a tracker mount. The shot was processed in PixInsight (lights, darks, flats) and in C1.
  5. @helged I used the SL35mm on my SL2 for some tripod shots in my light polluted skies here in Fairfax VA. There is some CA in the shot but not as bad as a non-APO lens. I have been attempting to do wide field images and and use PixInsight for processing, but have really fallen short of my goals here. I do suspect that I have some technique issues, but have a lot to learn if I want to keep using this camera system for astrophotography. Attached are 2 crops from one shot at the end of a 15 shot interval run, SOC with only White (+100) and Black (-100) adjustments in C1, SL2, Sl35mm f/2, ISO800, 4sec, 807px square. The grey-ish crop is near center and when pixel peeping, there is some elongation, and some hot pixels. And the CA is not very evident. The darker crop is at one corner, and there is some CA. The hot pixels show up "perfectly". I will state that I have been working on technique when not shooting terrestrial shots now and again, and my technique is not what it could be. Tommy.
  6. Great write up, John. I look forward to more of your work! Tommy.
  7. Exactly @Slender! Sorry, @Eclectic Man, that I didn't spell that out. While turning the focus ring, and half-pressing the shutter, three (3) distances are displayed: "BACK", "FOCUS", and "FRONT" Tommy.
  8. I did some wide field captures back in November 2020 taking advantage of some decently dark skies in Buxton NC using my SL2 and the SL35mm. For focusing, I set the camera to manual focus and relied on the top display to tell me when I hit infinity. My shots (I did a total of 16 at 4sec/3200iso with the camera on a tacking mount) came out well - not perfect. I use astrophotography oriented software to process the shots and I like this first result. My mentors/peers in the local astronomy club were gracious and congratulated me on the result. Here is a link to my result posted on my account at astrobin.com: https://www.astrobin.com/v0drai/?nc=user Tommy.
  9. I had a slightly different experience connecting to FOTOS... After updating my firmware, I tried connecting the camera to FOTOS and it did not find/connect using the existing information in the application. I deleted the camera and connected in the fastest time I've witnessed so far. There was no mention of any connection improvements in the release notes, so maybe I got lucky. Tommy.
  10. Goal Zero has a number of options that include different battery options as well as solar recharging for the battery pack. I'm not sure of the operating temperatures, so you might have a look at their specifications. I purchased a battery pack and it serves the SL2 well delivering power during operation as well as recharging. I have not purchased a solar panel, so I can't say from experience anything about them.
  11. Agreed. One thing I think is behind the challenge of recording Log on camera is the ability of both the camera processing power and the SD card ability to record and keep up. With the SD card, there is a huge amount of variability which is why I think that the higher quality formats are not available for in-camera recording. I purchased an external monitor/recorder for the higher quality formats, Log included, and can say that everything works very well in that setup both in the SL and the SL2. If you need that level of video, the external monitor/recorder is essential. Tommy.
  12. I did some video recording last week and found that for the styles - like you - they all looked the same. I found that once a style was set, additional adjustments could be made, including saturation, sharpness, and contrast. So, that is the way I did 120fps (and 150fps) for a couple of test recordings. BTW, this was all recorded at full HD as the other formats were not able to record to my SD cards (my Atomos set up was not with me, so I was limited to just full HD). Proceed to Main Menu 2 -> Video Style -> Video Style Settings to make adjustments to any of the styles on the menu list. I did note that the settings once adjusted did make a little difference. Tommy.
  13. I agree with @caissa, but what is missing is Leica confirming exactly what the power requirements are for the camera. Only by testing did I get a solution for powered operation - using a PD compliant power source is required. Nothing in the specifications/data sheet or instruction manual calls out any specifics. Tommy.
  14. Final post on this topic... I was able to verify that PD designated equipment is required and works very well with the SL2. And, Leica needs to include very specific power requirements in their documentation. To be clear, even if a charger says it covers the same wattage (volts/amps) steps that a PD compliant device uses, the charger does not work for providing power to the camera in an ongoing manner. It charges but does not provide ongoing power. Thanks @scott kirkpatrick and @caissa for your persistence in getting me the correct information. Tommy.
  15. I considered a rider on my homeowners policy but found that they would not pay out on a claim if the equipment was used professionally. Since I occasionally show my work with offers to sell, I opted for a commercial policy. I use Heffernan here in the US and insure my equipment for replacement cost. There are options for rental equipment coverage as well as coverage internationally. Tommy.
