enboe Posted November 21, 2006 Share #1 Â Posted November 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) While I wait for the saga of my "broken from the day I received it" M8 to play out, I would like to solicit experiences on two issues from users who received working cameras: Â 1) How scratch-resistant has the rear screen been? Â I see 4 potential levels of protection, but only want to use the minimum depending on the level of scratch-resistance. The 4 levels are unprotected, removable plastic screen skin, case with open back similar to the Leica leather design, and case with closed back similar to the Leica neoprene design. I tend to walk around outdoors in the park in good weather, so the camera will be rubbing up against a man's golf shirt, or in colder weather, a fleece or leather jacket (no metal zippers or buttons, of course). Â 2) Has anyone successfully used a 4GB card from a vendor other than Hama or Extrememory, the 2 vendors listed on the official Leica sheet? Â Thank you. chetccox Posted November 21, 2006 Share #2 Â Posted November 21, 2006 The screen seems to be quite scratch resistant, at least so far. I don't like screen protectors and can never seem to get the d..n things on without air bubbles. I have been using a transcend 4gb 150x sd card with no problem. thomasl.se Posted November 21, 2006 Share #3 Â Posted November 21, 2006 I'm not sure about the size of it, but "Hori" silicone screen protector for the portable gaming console Nintendo DS is excellent. Attaches by static - no glue - and is removable without any sticky residue. Anti-reflective and of course very scratch resistant; it's designed to withstand constant use of a stylus. Relatively cheap too at $10 or so.
baloo Posted November 21, 2006 Share #4  Posted November 21, 2006 Day 12 of use and so far no protection on the screen and it is holding good and the only time the camera is not around my neck is when I’m a sleep but not far I usually put screen protector but don’t like the fogie look so I’m trying without protector. But I’m careful about the use
grober Posted November 21, 2006 Share #5 Â Posted November 21, 2006 ScreenPatronus, Screen protector - the difference is amazing. has the right size for the M8. Â One order, shipped promptly via first class mail, will get you three protectors. Crytal clear and easy to install. I can already see that each screen protector is meant to last weeks not years. I don't see that as a problem with this vendor necessarily; just comes with the territory. Â I'd much rather sacrifice a screen protector than risk scratching the screen itself. Leica DeOcean Posted November 21, 2006 Share #6  Posted November 21, 2006 Eric  I've been using the camera since Nov 4th. No scratches even though it bangs on my shirt buttons ........... I used the plastic screen skins twice and each time they were curled up at one edge within minutes and were useless from that point on. I just don't use them anymore. Instead ........ I am more cautious especial;ly if I am wearing my zippered jacket.
doubice Posted November 21, 2006 Share #7 Â Posted November 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have a screen protector on my Digilux 2, as well as on my wife's D-Lux2. The one on the Digilux 2 has been on it since I bought the camera - close to two years ago. The trick in applying the protector is: Â 1) Perfectly clean screen, without any fingerprints or dust. Â 2) When applying, do not touch the protector from the side that will be applied against the screen. I use tweezers to handle the screen. Â 3) First line-up and position one side of the protector on the screen (I start with the left side - short side), than lay down the protector gradually on the screen, while pressing on it from the top to dislodge any air bubbles. The pressing motion is applied from top to bottom and back up again, while laying the protector down at the same time. Â All the best, Â Jan

I've used them for about 8 months on a Canon 5D and Epson R-D1 and haven't had to change them yet. They seem very tough and scratch resistant.  Bob. think Posted November 22, 2006 Share #10 Â Posted November 22, 2006 I'll third the ScreenPatronus recommendation. I use them on everything that I can; my BlackBerry, my 10D, my SD550, Razr, etc. Extremely durable...I've been using the first one that I put on my BlackBerry for almost a year. Â Just make sure that your screen is clean, that you're in a dust "free" environment when applying and that you seat the corners well at application. Â I've found nothing better for an LCD protector yet.
SoBeachKid Posted December 27, 2006 Share #11 Â Posted December 27, 2006 Hi, Â A little trick that can make one's life easier when applying the filter is to apply it in a bathroom (for example) in which you had left hot water running for a while to increase relative humidity: It greatly reduces the amount of dust in the environment. Â It works nicely for portable video-game systems , it should also work for M8s but I will only receive mine in a couple of days. Â Franck
marknorton Posted December 27, 2006 Share #12 Â Posted December 27, 2006 It's nothing like an iPod which scratches if you just look at it but I agree a screen protector is a good idea.
jedisdl Posted December 27, 2006 Share #13 Â Posted December 27, 2006 Another possibility is to use part of a Hoodman flip-up cap. Simply detach the flip-up portion and you get a sturdy screen protector - not very pretty, but long lasting and effective. The flip-up caps have been designed to allow better viewing of P&S LCD's in sunlight. Â Steve

mr_big Posted December 27, 2006 Share #15 Â Posted December 27, 2006 I've been using Invisible Shield as LCD protection on my electronic gear for the past year and I think it's great. It won't peel off and it's indestructible (with a lifetime guarantee). You can get 40% off if you order before the end of the year. jlancasterd Posted December 27, 2006 Share #16 Â Posted December 27, 2006 I have my DMR screens protected by the digiCOVERplus films imported into UK from Germany by Robert White. They are supplied cut to size and are very easy to fit if you follow the instructions included in the packet. They are also guaranteed for 5 years. Â If/when I get an M8 I will certainly fit one of these films
topoxforddoc Posted December 27, 2006 Share #17 Â Posted December 27, 2006 Screenpatronus are very good. I have used them on my DMR for about a year now. Great company - theye evn supplied some extra standrad sheets for the secondary screen on the DMR FOC. Â Charlie
larrylgreenhill Posted December 27, 2006 Share #18 Â Posted December 27, 2006 Eric: I'm using the Screenpatronus on my Leica R8/DMR and on the Leica M8 for the rear panel LCD screens. Another important considerations are the tiny windows for the M8's rangefinder. These windows invariably get smudged by fingerprints, and the clarity need to focus is compromised. I'm going to try the Screenpatronus plastic guards on them as well. Â I've not been to get my Leica M8 to recognize any one of the 3 HCSD 4 GB cards from SanDisk I own. Upgrading from firmware 1.06 to the newer 1.09 version made no difference, either in the AWB mistakes or in giving the M8 the ability to read the new HCSD standard 4 GB memory card. However, a much less expensive transend 150 4GB SD card, which does not meet the new HCSD standard, works just fine in the DMR and in the M8.
