Rogativa, San Juan

The monument overlooking San Juan Bay commemorates the delivery of San Juan from the British invasion of San Juan 1797. The story, perhaps romantic, goes like this: on the night of April 30th besieged and hard pressed the woman of San Juan led by the bishop of the city formed a torchlight Rogativa or a religious procession around the walls of San Juan praying for divine intercession from the depredations of the English. From outside the walls the British mistook the procession for reinforcements and the next day gave up the siege and sailed away.

I have photographed this monument many times. This version was shot in the morning.
