Hi

I am the owner of a D2 camera, and yes I like it a lot, and I have two questions.

The rubber on the housing has started to become loose. Has any of you had success with a repair done by your self, and how?

And do you use a USB cable for download, or do you take out the SD card? I been wondering if the SD-slot will wear out over time? All comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Bjarne

Hi Bjarne,

I see 2 alternatives for you:

1) sending your camera back to Leica for repair. I don't know how much it will cost and how long it would take.

2) Get the rubber replaced by leather (CameraLeather.com Custom camera leather and leatherette)! You can see to fine examples on D2 here: Pimp MyRide!!! - Journal - Motorsports Photographer ~ John Thawley :: Photography of American Le Mans, Grand Am, SPEED World Challenge

Best,

Carlos

Leica in NJ replaced the black rubber on mine free of charge while i waited - about an hour. i did call them first to inform them of the problem. Atthat time they did not have the rubber covering in stock and asked that i check in about a month. i called back in a month - it was in stock and they did the repair on the spot - the camera looks new !

Well, if you´re worried about the SD slot, why aren´t you as worried about the USB contacts? :) They´re much smaller and flimsier.

FWIW, I´ve had my D2 for over 5 years, always removing the card for d´l, without any problems whatsoever. Also, none of my other cameras, whether using CF or SD, have ever had any problems either.

About the leather: mine did come loose where my right hand fingers grabbed the camera; I considered it more as a battle-scar and didn´t do anything. When it was in for sensor replacement last winter, it came back with the leather replaced.

The USB / card reader question is a no-brainer... use a card reader.

Regarding the grip, I always had the impression that the material may have been a touch to big on the early cameras or the "clip tabs" may have been off in the mold. But it you try to re-seat it, you'll notice, it really doesn't want to seat. Just an observation... I could be wrong.

Wrap it in leather... it's a good friend and you should treat it as such. :)

Hi

Thansk to all of you for replies. I stopped thinking about the rubber getting loose, I now see it as a battle-scar (thanks to Per) and if the sensor fail it will get fixed. Good point about the USB connector Per, but if it fails I still have the SD slot. But I will remove the card as I find it most convenient.

Best regards

Bjarne
