nugat Posted September 20, 2009 Share #121 Posted September 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I do think the M8 is a great camera, especially for portraits and images you want to put on web sites, but the M9 with its superior sensor just blows it away. It would be like comparing a Nikon D3 to my D300. M9 and M8 have the same sensor (design-wise) coming from the same production line of which the same pixel "size" is a tell-tale. On the sensor there are applied modified Bayer filter, microlens pattern and a new IR filter compound. M8 sensor is 56% area of full frame 36x24mm M9. To say that the latter blows it away is like saying that "double whopper is superior and blows away the regular one". To tell whether M9 is significantly different inside from M8 one would need to dissect it.

Guest Lotw Posted September 20, 2009 Share #125 Posted September 20, 2009 You should test at F2.0, this lens is at F8.0 way beyond its optimum Btw, what's amazing?
Doc Henry Posted September 20, 2009 Author Share #126 Posted September 20, 2009 You should test at F2.0, this lens is at F8.0 way beyond its optimum Btw, what's amazing? Lotw, Yes i will do as you said ! Once again the M8 is still a very good camera in my opinion. It is true that the M9 has improvements over the M8 including number of pixels and other changes, but for me the M8 is the M8 with its "imperfections"(little) but with beautiful photos
Photoskeptic Posted September 20, 2009 Share #127 Posted September 20, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Doc, thanks for your efforts. You have effectively demonstrated for me and my style of photography why replacing my M8 with the M9 is pointless.
Doc Henry Posted September 20, 2009 Author Share #128 Posted September 20, 2009 (edited) Doc, thanks for your efforts. You have effectively demonstrated for me and my style of photography why replacing my M8 with the M9 is pointless. John, Thank you for the comment. I think it's a shame for a good camera like the M8 with its high quality (and good Leica lens), is discredited (many sales) because the M9 arrive . Personally,i keep my 2 M8 * and i will buy a M9 later . Meanwhile, the M8 give me entire satisfaction and make great pictures. PS : John, very nice pictures on your link specially "landscapes" : are all your pictures taken with M8 ? * As I keep my M7 and R8, R4S, SL reflex cameras Edited September 20, 2009 by Doc Henry

Sun/light looks different, a lot different. Actually I like the full M8 image better then the full M9 image but the M9 crop looks better then the M8 crop. Just goes to show you the web is not the place to be checking thing like this out.

A_E_Darling Posted September 22, 2009 Share #133 Posted September 22, 2009 Fascinating, a nice chap takes some simple test pictures which are not perhaps scientifically exact comparisons and it quickly decends into correction and counter correction. Only on a Leica forum! You have to brave to post anything here! How does a Canon 5DMk2 compare to the above M9 and M8.1 images?......(runs to hide the fusillade of derision). Me I couldn't possibly comment! PS I found it interesting thanks for taking the trouble Doc
Guest Lotw Posted September 22, 2009 Share #134 Posted September 22, 2009 (edited) Yes thanks! Far more informative and again a confirmation of my suspicion that there are cyan-problems with the colours of the M9. So your M9 for B&W and your M8 for colour...
