The Photographic Solutions website claims that Leica uses Eclipse. E2 is a mixture of ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol. Eclipse is 100% methyl alcohol (methanol). Rocky Who is correct--tour guide [using isopropyl] or PS who says it is Eclipse [methanol]? Jaap--yes it can crack, and the thinner, the easier! Thanks for the 24 SX photo! michali Posted September 25, 2009 Share #25 Posted September 25, 2009 I have had very good results wet cleaning on my M8's with "Visible Dust" products, VisibleDust -- Wet Cleaning Chart Normally, I use a blower, then the Arctic Butterfly and if all else fails I go for the wet cleaning method & swabs. The sensor on my M9 had visible spots (looks like oil) from the 1st exposures, it's already due for a clean. Will these products work on the M9 sensor as well, would there be any difference as opposed to the M8 sensor other than size of course? Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

stevme Posted September 27, 2009 Share #27 Posted September 27, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I cleaned the CCD imager in an experimental lab apparatus last night with the SensorVu. It did a terrific job (examining the surface post cleaning with a lamp and magnifier built into the lab instrument). As Jaap suggested, I blew off the surface first with a blower. There were a couple of very minor spots remaining and I used a drugstore swab (QTip) and isopropyl alcohol on that section of the imager and then after the alcohol dried, the SensorVu. Job complete! If you will notice in the recently posted video of M9 manufacture, the technician cleans off the sensor with a swab and isopropyl alcohol (listen carefully to the audio as she does the cleaning). I was shocked to hear this, as there is so much discussion of cleaning fluids for sensors, presented as a black art by various fluid manufacturers. If it's good enough for Leica . . . Here is the video: Assembling the Leica M9 I don't know if the drugstore swab is such a good idea as fibers may cause scratches. Having said all this, I still bought some specialized swabs and fluids from Visible Dust. I guess in this case my convictions do not match my courage.
