Is the Digilux 3 gone ?

Last month my D2 was stolen. It was my first trip with the camera. Needless to say I'm quite upset.

I do have insurance and my insurance company has been great so far. Here is the problem. They need to replace my camera with a new like model. Obviously there are no new D2's around anymore but they can't even find a new D3. I don't even want a D3. I just can't get with the feel and weight of that camera. I'm sure it take great photos but it does not do it for me.

They said they would replace it with a Nikon most likely a D90 or D300. They are even trying to keep my claim open a few months to see if leica comes along with something new. Has anyone heard if a D4 is in the wings? Is the new rumored Panasonic GF1 the new D4?

Thanks Dean

Sorry to hear that.

D2 is a fixed-lens P&S (a glorious one, nonetheless). D3 is a DSLR with an optical

viewfinder. The rumoured Panasonic GF1, if were real, won't even have an internal

viewfinder, a la Olympus E-P1. Nobody knows for sure if Leica will re-badge it, much less

how to name it.

Dean,

Very sorry to hear about your loss.

I know that Popflash sells second-hand, refurbished D2's from time to time so, since they are a bona fide retailer, your insurance company might agree to replace your D2 with one from Popflash.

Pete.

Hi Farnz,

I know about Popflash. That is were I picked up my D2, but thanks for the tip. Unfortunately My policy won't allow them to replace with a used / second hand product. I will buy a D2 on my own most likely two of them but my insurance must replace with new. Not a bad position to be in unless you own mid level Leica.

Aha, in that case I have the last new D2 (well it will be as soon as I polish all the dings out), which I can offer to your insurance company for - shall we say - $50,000?:D

What a good insurance company, don't ever change. My D2 was stolen about two year ago, and they simply looked at the megapixel count to figure how much it was worth. They didn't even compare it with a V-Lux 1, which they considered better due to the higher megapixels. At best, I could get a cheap point-and-shoot. Bastards, with no sense for values.

Dean--

You might want to have your insurance company check with Leica USA. There was some word on the forum a couple weeks ago that they had some so-called "demo" Digilux 2's, probably cameras traded in on the Digilux 3 upgrade.

Maybe a "demo" model would satisfy your insurance company. Let's hope so!

Good luck.

I wasn't aware Leica had a trade n program for the d2 - d3.

Is it possible or likely they'll have one for the orphaned d3 to ????

It was for Digilux 2 owners who's sensor had failed. They had the option to trade up to a Digilux 3 at a discount as opposed to having the Digilux 2 repaired and sent back to them.

I need to say, I have never understood everyone's problem with the D3.

I LOVE mine.

I don't get it. Sure, the D2 is great but the D3 is better.

I don't understand it.

"It's heavy."

So is a Les Paul custom... but no-one cares. It screams.

I don't understand it.

I was happy for the upgrade and service.

The D3 is a better camera.

The D2's evf was terrible -at best- the chip was small, it wrote so slowly you'd probably get mugged (or stabbed) waiting for it to write...

What's the big deal?

To be honest -and this is not directed at anyone in particular- but it seems that a lot of retirees are waiting around for the next newest and greatest thing (to blow their money on) to post photographs here.... of their pet kitten.

A ten thousand dollar camera will not improve the quality of one's composition.

Spend the money on a trip to Africa. I don't mean to be the net internet flamer... but come on!!!

Quite agree, I love my D3. It's a wonderful camera that you have to learn to master, as the D2 in fact. They both suck when handled poorly. Many compare the D3 with their other DSLR, but I have no other camera to compare with. Have no intentions to get another either. Not even a D4, because I'm happy with what I have. I guess the D2 folks thinks the same, no reason to upgrade (to what?) since it provides what they need, and more to that, sometimes. As the D3 do. They are both good, in their own way.

Yup.

I have a very nice relationship with my D3. It does what I ask it to do when I need it. The only things in my bag these days is the D3, my Rollei 2.8 E2 and a D-lux3.

I get along very well with those.

  • 2 weeks later...
The Digilux 3 is not even mentioned on the newly-updated Leica website (at least the US version). That indicates to me that it's gone.

If this is the case, then it is a tragedy of sorts...

As owner of D2 and D3 I find both cameras fantastic.
