hello, i'm new here. i'm amazed i did not know of this forum before. anyway, after owning several leica cameras, i purchased my first leica digital. i would appreciate hearing from anyone who has taped up their d-lux 4!

what kind of tape is tried and true? photos of the tape job? experiences removing tape and residue? what types of tape TO STAY AWAY FROM?

thanks :)

you know... covering up the body with tape... it's a trick to help one keep a better grip on an otherwise slick finish (and it helps keep the body cleaner than it would otherwise be)... i don't like being owned by my cameras; the last thing i want to do after shooting is wipe it clean (don't even get me started on apple's white electronics!).

come on... surely someone knows what i'm talking about! in their reviews on the d-lux 4, various professionals recommended it. anyone?

Try 1 inch black camera tape; typically sold at ' motion picture grip and lighting' rental places. Its black, it has a nice texture, and it does not leave a residue when you take it off.

Welcome to the Forum

My first thought was the problem of leaving a residue, or of removing some of the finish along with the tape. RMF's solution seems to overcome both objections.

Here's a useful tip: Taping a Saturday night special handgun that you plan to use for a murder will help prevent leaving latent finger prints.

Better to tape up the photographer. Here you can choose your level of stealth:

It will take your eyebrows with it when you pull it off though....

Another suggestion is to use a plastic bag. I saw some tv remote controls covered into a plastic bag (by the same reason, I think) and looks great. As a plus, you get an instant shield for the rain and why not, a diving camera.

Good luck with your tape process. Why bother to buy a Leica if you'll cover in scotch ?!

I believe that d-lux4 it's too beautiful to be put in a bag, that's why I prefer the "naked" version with only a bower leather hand strap.

i just read this post and saw that the bower strap is less than $6.00 @ amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Bower-SS2477BK-Camera-Wrist-Strap/dp/B000NI569E?&camp=212361&linkCode=wsw&tag=prk60091com-20&creative=380789) -and bought it- it looks like the answer to my problem and it looks to be a better solution than either the leica or franiec grip

Wrist strap is essential safety accessory and Bower one looks good indeed.

My grip was not intended to replace function of wrist strap, in fact I strongly encourage use of wrist or neck strap regardless of grip or not.

Primary function of the grip is to provide comfortable handling and holding of the cam, even one handed. When used in tandem with wrist strap it provides utmost security to otherwise beautiful but slick body of D-lux4.

Cheers

I have the Leica D-Lux 2 which is essentialy a previos version of the new D-Lux 4, same size and shape and overall layout. I have been using a product available from Radio Shack to tape up this camera. But my approach is different than one might guess at. The product is really designed to be a velcro on one dide and of course a not too sticky tape on the adheasive side attached to the camera. My trick is that I velcro a second layor unto the first and I now have a soft but large enough vertical grip. This has enhanced the handling of the D-Lux 2 a great deal. It's no longer slippery at all and the vertical grip on the frount right side is not only soft and plyant, it actually provides an excellent grip feeling.

For the rest of the camera I used black electrical tape and followed the general style of my M5 camera. Meaning I the lower portion of the camera is blacked out and the uppermost portion is silver. This has enhanced the "rangefinder" look.

On the edges and corners where I hold the camera I have also applied the velcro in small amounts and this provides a soft feeling and non slippery point for each of my finger tips.

My D-Lux 2 now looks great and handles great. A very large improvement over the original handling of the camera has been realised.

It may not sound believable to those of you who have never tried this, but I grew tired of having to be extra carefull when holding the D-Lux 2 because of it's minamalistic shape and small size. The camera is the same camera except now it's comfortable to hold.

IMHO, the very best camera wrist strap on the market is found here: gordy's camera straps I have four of them on my cameras and countless other members of "Rangefinder Forum" endorse them.

Perfect! Thanks for highlighting this company. It's so cool to find companies making such high performance parts out of natural materials and traditional manufacturing skills. Looks like I'm gonna have to empty my paypal account.
