mikki Posted June 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted June 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, I've been looking for days and days now in google for RAW-samples of the M8. Downsized JPEGs were all I could find. So I finally found this forum and I was wondering if some people would like to send me a few DNG files. If it is possible, I'd like to have all kinds of scenes, low-ISO, high-ISO etc. I've tried the camera in a store a few weeks ago, but was unable to take photographs with it. I'd like to have some closer examination before dropping such a large amount of money. Thanks in advance!
Advertisement Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Hi mikki, Take a look here Looking for DNG samples. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted June 17, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 17, 2009 Image quality is not a concern, and I'm sure that somebody will send you some. I might do so myself, but have no access right now. However it is far more important that you feel confident with the rangefinder concept, as that is the cause of many problems, users who bought the camera for the undisputed image quality, but misjudged the basic ergonomics and rangefinder experience. And welcome to the forum -stay on, even after this initial question has been answered. And I would direct you to the Dutch section too. There is quite a lively Dutch group here. mikki Posted June 17, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted June 17, 2009 Thank you for your reaction, funny to have your first reaction from another dutch person on an international forum :-) Well, I was thinking about the M8 because I think it suits my type of photography: - I'm not a snapshotter, I usually take long to even make one photo :-) - I especially like the lenses between 35 and 135mm - I like manual focussing, but my D200 doesn't allow it very well - I like the concept of seeing your environment through the finder - Being a female photographer, the D200 even with a small lens is particulary heavy for me. It also forces me to put it in a backpack instead of a shoulder bag - I only use primes right now, and I'm happy with that I found one demo model for 2500 euro, which is quite a bit less that the average new price. I like the D200 I currently own though, but I think I would like the M8 even better. However, it's a large investment. The new E-P1 looks promising too, but it lack a few things the M8 has (good viewfinder) and I'm not to fond of all those gimmicks it has (Art filters and such). Also, having seen the early E-P1 samples, the image quality isn't that great either.
Marquinius Posted June 17, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 17, 2009 Mikki, hi, Jaap already pointed you towards Dutch members section, so you must be able to find some more folks "just around the corner". I'm willing to supply all kind of DNG's: I'll need an e-mail adress and then some that will accept 10Mb files ... perhaps better: shoot me a private message with a postal adress at marco@marquinius.com and I'll burn some images on a disk. But as Jaap says: it's not the DNG's, but the range finder that you should really look at. It took me quite a while to get used and comfortable with it! Afijn: stuur een mail en we pakken de draad op! Marco
holgerf Posted June 17, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 17, 2009 You may donwload original DNG files hier MobileMe - iDisk Open the folder M8 and choose by lens. However, I strongly second the hints of Jaap. Have fun Holger
mikki Posted June 17, 2009 Author Share #6 Posted June 17, 2009 Wow, thank you for the samples! The level of detail is really amazing, but of course, you're using leica lenses. Would that be any different with the cheaper Voigtländer lenses for example? Also, does somebody have some high-iso examples? (I think the 640 Iso is high enough for me though) Thanks everybody for your input!
sandymc Posted June 17, 2009 Share #7 Posted June 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) There are samples on the Leica web site as "performance proofs" : Leica Camera AG - Downloads There were also some for the lenses, but don't remember where exactly on the site they were. photophile Posted June 18, 2009 Share #8 Posted June 18, 2009 I shoot all leica lenses except I bought a CV 28 2.0 Ultron a few months ago when my 35 cron was in the shop. I have been very, very impressed with that " cheap" lens - and have made some of my favorite images of late, with it. Several are posted on this site in the people section. You can see for yourself. Don't underestimate the zeiss and cv line-up. The m8 is a great, albeit quirky photographic tool. I used to use it to compliment my d200 - now my d200 compliments the m8 - which I use daily and professionally. ISO 640 is excellent as it approaches film-like characteristics. 1250 is usable when shot and processed correctly. 2500 will get you an image but its use is limited. Good luck. Tot Ziens from the States. CH

I tried..... and failed so was unable to take the job. Shame.
gfspencer Posted June 18, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 18, 2009 Well, I was thinking about the M8 because I think it suits my type of photography: - I'm not a snapshotter, I usually take long to even make one photo :-) The M8 actually takes very good snapshots. - I especially like the lenses between 35 and 135mm With the M8 you might change your lens range from 28 to 90mm but it would be about the same. - I like manual focussing, but my D200 doesn't allow it very well Me too. - I like the concept of seeing your environment through the finder Me too. - Being a female photographer, the D200 even with a small lens is particulary heavy for me. It also forces me to put it in a backpack instead of a shoulder bag You can get an M8 and four lenses in a small shoulder bag. - I only use primes right now, and I'm happy with that With Leica you are looking at great prime lenses.
