Mountain Bluebirds

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I visited the Sierra Nevada north of Truckee California; after about a mile along a washboarded gravel road I found a meadow filled to overflowing with wild mountain light and the promise of a drenching. At the meadow's edge a pair of Mountain Bluebirds was converting invertebrates into the next crop of blue bug-eaters:

technical stuff: R8/DMR, 560mm f/6.8 Telyt-R, UET-R extension tube, shoulder stock and monopod. The second photo is cropped significantly. All comments welcome.

Doug -

As always, superb for subject, composition, detail, light, color and selective focus.

Absolutely superb. Your bird shots are A1...some of the best I have seen anywhere.

Thanks all for your comments. I want to mention that the lens I used for these photos and for the White-faced Ibis posted a couple of days ago was given to me in poor condition. I removed the camo tape and tape residue, had DAG re-lube & repair the focus but it still has scratches and pits in the glass. Basically it was unmarketable. I guess my point is that one need not spend $thousand$ on a lens to make bird photos.

As the saying goes "Birds of a feather flock together". I spotted these gulls taking advantage of a pontoon to have a rest after a hard rainstorm. I found it fascinating that they were all facing exactly the same way.
