Advertisement Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 Hi jaapv, Take a look here M9 on track. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jonoslack Posted June 12, 2009 Share #2 Posted June 12, 2009 Thank you Jaap - it would have been great to have been there.
jaapv Posted June 12, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted June 12, 2009 You might read my post. That it is in an advanced stage of development, that it will be full format and that there is a good chance of getting rid of the IR filters. It will have a "standard"M view/rangefinder and S2 electronics. the latter means there will be scope for more extensive in-camera noise reduction and for higher quality Jpegs, besides speeding up proceedings. Should it be delayed beyond say, the end of this year/beginning of the next, there will be an M8.3 of not-disclosed specification.
zeitz Posted June 12, 2009 Share #4 Posted June 12, 2009 Thanks, Jaapv. Very encouraging.
andybarton Posted June 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted June 12, 2009 The news as told to me (in the other thread) was that a FF M digital was a long way off. This also came from Stefan Daniel...
noah_addis Posted June 13, 2009 Share #6 Posted June 13, 2009 This seems to contradict the other thread on the same subject. Which are we to believe? I'd definitely prefer to believe this one...

Disappointing to me that they are not taking the opportunity to improve the viewfinder/rangefinder.

adan Posted June 13, 2009 Share #11 Posted June 13, 2009 I find "on track" and "a long way off" somewhat contradictory, as headlines. But it's probably like Plato's Cave, or the blind men exploring an elephant. Allegory of the cave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Blind men and an elephant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I take it to mean that Leica is working on it, it is their ultimate (M) goal, the problems are still tough, the S2 technology may help, once established - and don't hold your breath. scaryink Posted June 13, 2009 Share #12 Posted June 13, 2009 (edited) How increasing the sensor size to trad 35 format is going to make this kit that much more or a commercial success. It will be technically interesting. I hope Leica doesnt try and get into the pixel wars - they will lose. I think a great area of interest for Leica users would be in ultra high clean iso's. Also an extreme increase in dynamic range would really be helpful. These are the kind of things that really would place the Digital M in a useful niche for the pro and interested hobbyist. And speaking of grocery lists, how about an iso wheel integrated into the preview wheel? Also the S2 seems to be coming at just the wrong economic time. This is of course no fault of their own, but I know that MF digital is on the ropes. 35mm has come close to being equal in rez if not quality and few seem willing to spend mega money for a larger sensor that is somewhat cumbersome to use. I hope this investment doesn't end up closing the doors on this venerable company. Edited June 13, 2009 by scaryink addtl info
barjohn Posted June 13, 2009 Share #13 Posted June 13, 2009 Without a new sensor and by implication electronics what could they offer in an M8.3? And if they are offering a new sensor and electronics why would they call it an M8.3 instead of an M9? Thus, should they offer an M8.3 (the other thread says they will not offer anything unless and until they can offer an M9) it would have to be a cosmetic alteration like white body or safari paint job. I think that whether the M9 ever comes to fruition will completely depend on the success of the S2 so you all need to purchase the S2 and lenses if you ever hope to see an M9. jl4069 Posted June 13, 2009 Share #19 Posted June 13, 2009 It REALLY sounds like June 2011 at the very earliest, possibly 2012. Indeed from what I have read everywhere almost no one would disagree on this. JL
