Cropfactor D-lux 4

Hi,

 

How is the cropfactor of the D-lux 4.

When I calculat 50mm : 5.1mm = then I have 4.7

But I read in other place that the 1.1:63" Chip has

a cropfactor of 4.3

 

What is the exact cropfactor of D-Lux4?

Technically there is no crop factor as there is no cropping; images taken with the D-Lux 4 use all of the image circle that is worth being used. The image diagonal is 9.2 mm, regardless of the aspect ratio selected, so compared to the image diagonal of a 35 mm camera – if that’s what you wish to compare to –, the factor is about 4.7. Note that the sensor is bigger than the image circle of the lens, so calculations based on the sensor size lead to erroneous results. What we have here is the exact opposite of a crop sensor: Where, say, an APS-C sensor crops the image circle of a lens designed for a 35 mm camera, the D-Lux 4 has an oversized sensor that is even larger than the image circle.

Taking the numbers from its spec. the equivalent 35mm focal length for the LX3 is 24-60mm, the cropping factor based on 35mm terms would be about 4.7x.
